Wayne Mullins points to a Bain & Company survey where 80% of small business owners rated their service superior, but only 8% of their customers agreed. He argues entrepreneurs need brutal honesty about their actual quality to keep customers coming back.

We as entrepreneurs are often very delusional about the quality of service. So Bain and Company, they surveyed 4,000 small businesses across the United States, and they said to the owners of these companies, how would you rate yourself in terms of the level of service you provide to your customers? Option 1, superior service. Option 2 is good service. 3 is average. 4 is terrible service. And 80% of those entrepreneurs said that they provide superior service. So Bain and Company, being a smart research company, said something's not right here. Like, how in the world are 80% of these companies providing superior service? So they went back to those same companies and got permission to actually survey the customers from those companies. And so when they did that, the results came back in. Only 8% of the customers of those companies reported that those companies provided superior service. Number one, for us as entrepreneurs, we have to be transparent. We have to be honest with ourselves. It's our baby, right? We love our product, our service, but sometimes we need to say our baby's ugly. We have to be brutally honest. List.
