Kathryn Gordon watched her father cheat and her mother accept it. She built a different marriage with John, one where he respected her choice to stay home and they handled conflict without contempt. That mutual respect became their foundation.

When I met John, I was kind of the one doing that, and he was just getting started. And yeah, I never thought that I would be the person to take a back seat. I had watched my mom and dad. My dad was a naval aviator and was unfaithful, and my mother took a back seat. I watched how that wreaked havoc on her. And so I was just, like, determined that I would never be that woman. And it's so— it's funny that it turned out that way. And I think it did. Because of this. He never, ever made me feel bad about my role. That's the one thing I will say. Through all the things we went through and all the fights, he never, ever turned to me and said, well, you're not making money, because that would have been a really huge deal. And he did honor my role as somebody that was home providing a safe place for him and our children.
