Nick Roccanti explains why designers shouldn't create their own halftones for screen printing. Pre-made halftones misalign with the mesh and cause dot gain, where dots expand and darken unintentionally. Handle halftones during separation instead to avoid strange patterns and let the printer control the result.

Here's a quick tip when it comes to screen printing, don't have your designer make their own halftones. When halftones are pre made, they often don't align with the screen mesh which can take these really weird unwanted patterns in your designs. And this effect makes the shading look off and can ruin the overall look of your artwork. Then there's something called dot gain. That's when halftones expand during the printing process, creating a darker area than intended. The this happens if the halftones weren't created for screen printing. When we handle the halftones during the separation stage, we control for both the screen mesh interference and the dot gain and we make sure your artwork looks smooth and consistent on the final print. No weird patterns or dark spots. So trust us with your halftones and we'll make sure your design looks amazing just the way that you want it to be. So let us handle the details and your prints will look top notch.
