Dr. Caroline Williams argues we mistake suppressing symptoms for actual healing. She explains healing crises: temporary symptom flare-ups that are the body's natural self-repair process, not permanent setbacks. Understanding this distinction helps us support real healing instead of just masking what's happening.

We live in a culture and in a society that we have learned to value suppression of symptoms, right? Suppression of what's happening. And our perception is that means that we're better, and that does not mean that. And so, you know, what we want to understand is what's really happening, right? And so We don't— we're not, you know, I'm not saying that if you're in a really uncomfortable place, obviously you need relief, right? And, and I support that. Um, but we also want to understand, like, if somebody's going through a healing crisis, that that's a necessary thing, right? It's, it's, it's the way that the body heals, right? And it's not a forever thing, it's a temporary thing. And so We need to kind of understand how the body truly heals, and it's going to go through periods of healing crises, and that's a normal thing.
