Adapting Materials for Live Sessions with www.theautismhelper.com

Gina from The Autism Helper shows how to adapt the I Spy Animal Features book for screen use by taking screenshots of answer rows and pasting them onto PowerPoint slides. No printing or laminating needed. Kids point to animals on screen instead of handling physical cards.

Hi everyone, it's Gina from The Autism Helper. I wanted to show you a different way to use some of the resources online. I don't have a lot of printing capabilities here at my house. Actually, I'm running low on ink and paper and everything else, and then to get supplies to parents can be really difficult and it can just take a while. So I love these I Spy adapted books by Sarah from The Autism Helper. She's an amazing speech and language pathologist. And I was trying to think of a way to make them work for me at home and then make them accessible to a parent who may have very limited supplies as well, like me. So going along with our animal theme, I picked the I Spy Animal Features book. And when you first click on them in just the regular PowerPoint, they are obviously blank right now. But I figured out a very simple, fast way. It takes very little preparation, and then once you get a book done, then you're good to go. So at the very end of the book, there are all the answers, the picture choices for each of the pages. So what I do is I just take— I do have a Mac, so I am able to screenshot. So I take a little screenshot of the row, okay, and then I go back up to that page, page 3, and I just go ahead and move move this over and find where that went. Here we go. And I put it right into my PowerPoint. Okay? And then I just move it down and just quickly resize it. So now the choices that you normally would have printed out, laminated, and put in the book are right there for the parent and adult. So when you're reading the book, it'll look like this and you can go over it. "I spy with my little eyes an animal that has whiskers." And they can point to it or they can hold up the cat. Same thing with, you know, the second one. I spy with my little eyes an animal that plays in the mud. And maybe they can hold up their little pig, or like before, they can put it in the squishy mud. And then also you can always have your core board up on the side. Obviously you can resize it so that it's in a different spot. But that's just a simple way to kind of quickly adapt a book if you're limited on printer and ink and lamination and you know that your parents are and that you're maybe not able to create all these books and send them home with each of your kids.
