A de-escalation technique using visual cards lets staff silently communicate what a student in crisis needs—snack, water, space—without talking over each other. It cuts overwhelm and keeps the environment calm while the team coordinates care.

In the Defiance and De-escalation webinar, we're gonna talk about specific de-escalation strategies, and one of them is to reduce the overwhelm for the student that is already in a state of crisis. I love this set of visuals, or creating a simple set of visuals that teams can have to talk to one another to say what they need in a crisis, if they need a snack or water, to give the student space, so not everyone's talking over each other. We can kind of maintain that clear, calm environment, make sure we're giving the student space or getting enough support if we need it. This is a really cool strategy to help with that de-escalation.
