Creating a fringe board with Gina at The Autism Helper

Gina from The Autism Helper shows how to build a fringe board, a visual-AAC supplement with an orange background that holds nouns to pair with your core board's high-frequency words. She covers button sizing, customizing for any subject, and binding compact boards to your core board to keep lessons organized.

Hi everyone! As promised, this is Gina from The Autism Helper. I'm here to show you how to make a quick fringe board. We've went over how to make that core board, those most commonly used words in language, and now we're going to look at the nouns. And they're typically on an orange background, and you can make them for whatever you want, whatever pertains to your student, your classroom. You can have different boards for different subjects, such as this one for colors and art and art supplies. Not sure where that came from. So what you wanna do is start a new page. And again, it depends on how many items you wanna put on a page, how big you want your buttons to be. You can make them really, really large if you're just working on a few things. Maybe you're working on, let's see, say you're working on some supplies and you only have markers, and paint. And maybe those are the two choices that you want to work on today with your kiddos. So that's all you have. And obviously you can make the background, um, that orange color by going to the fill and getting orange. Same with this one, orange, that denotes that it is the fringe, the nouns. So you could do that, um, or you can have a bunch of supplies on there. That way, in case you're teaching a lesson, you You can always cover them up with a Post-it if you don't have them available, or you can say, "Oh, you're using the glue right now." Maybe they point to scissors and you can say, "No scissors, we have glue though," and use it like that. Bingo Daubers, I love too. So on your page, again, it depends on the size, but say you want to have a little bit more depth in there, and you want some more options. So you're gonna create your button again. And say maybe— I like to use 2. And you can go ahead and fill it as orange, and then we should be able to spray all of these. That way you don't have to keep individually. Okay, so now your fringe is created, and think about whatever you want to use. Maybe this is toys for this one, so maybe you have a doll baby in your room. Maybe you have a train set, and these are options for maybe centers or play. Um, maybe you have a ball and so on. So you can create it to have whatever you want. You can go along with your core board that you created. Um, I love to make really, really tiny ones and attach it to the top of the core board. Um, so you could have your fringe printed out and then just put it up here with a little binding strip, and I'll show you that again. That seems to be a really popular one, especially when you're teaching a lesson and you've got your core board and your fringe board and you have all these boards and supplies and it can be a little bit overwhelming. If you make them a little bit smaller and then bind them to the top of the core, that's a really great way to give a lesson. So that's a simple way to make a fringe board. Again, you can make them any way that's best for you and your students and put whatever you need on it.
