When a child is melting down or overwhelmed, give them physical and emotional space. Staying too close makes it worse. Safety first, but distance is the number-one thing that actually helps them calm down.

Alright, I love talking about strategies that can help our kids safely and effectively de-escalate when they are in meltdown mode, when they are struggling, when they're overstimulated, overwhelmed. How can we help them kind of regain composure? And one thing that we always want to consider is giving space. When you're upset, do you want someone all up in your business? Heck no! Give that child space. Give them some time to come back. Make sure they're safe, of course, but space and not having too much proximity to that child is the number one thing you can do.
