When a student won't give back an iPad, award a token immediately as they hand it over. They're already earning toward their next break, which makes the transition feel less like a loss and more like progress forward.

If your student is struggling giving back preferred items when they are done with them, let's say it's time to go to gym, it's time for to go back to academic work, and they're struggling giving back those items. If you use any type of token system, a great way to help through this transition is to give that first token when they give back the item. So let's say the child is playing with iPad and you're gonna come over and be like, hey, iPad time's done, and you're gonna offer that first check for giving back the iPad appropriately. So if they give back the iPad nicely, guess what? They were already working towards their next iPad break.
