A teacher shows how to use a visual schedule to help a student move from playing with trains to independent work. The key is giving clear warnings with a yellow cue, consistent language, and letting the student see what comes next so transitions feel predictable instead of sudden.

A waiting visual like this can be really helpful when transitioning from a preferred activity like playing with trains to maybe a less preferred activity like independent work. So when the student starts playing, I would show on their schedule what's next and say, okay, but it's not time yet. It's not time yet for independent work. You get to play with your trains. And this piece is really important, the yellow. This means it's almost time. So this is that transition warning. So when we are maybe a few minutes away from switching to independent work, I would show, okay, it's almost time to be done with trains. And then when we're ready to go, okay, it's ready to go to independent work, give the trains back.
