Sasha from TheAutismHelper.com shows an adapted book that teaches children with autism to connect emotions with their causes. Each page pairs a feeling like "embarrassed" or "bored" with scenarios to match, using laminated picture pieces and labeled baggies. It works for low-verbal learners who struggle with the "why" behind what they feel.

Hi, this is Sasha from TheAutismHelper.com, and this is a product preview of my "Why Do You Feel?" adapted book for children with autism. So this is kind of the final "WH" question to include in my book series. I love having adapted books that focus on one "who," "what," "where," "when," or "why" question, what that question is answering, and really work on that skill in isolation. So, um, this book works on pairing emotions with the reason you feel that emotion, which is a really hard skill for some of our kids to work on. I've spent a lot of time working on emotion training, and this is the place where a lot of my kids get stuck, and it's the place where it's really hard to assess your kids with less verbal skills if they understand this. So I love this book for specifically this skill set. So here are the picture pieces and the description of how to set up the book. So each page follows a familiar pattern. So, "Why do you feel happy?" "Because I..." and then you'll match the scenario. So, "Because I have a birthday today." Why do you feel frustrated? Mad. Scared. Cold. Proud. Hot. Upset. Sick. Bored. Embarrassed. Sad. So, I mean, there's some range. I mean, some of these are higher-level emotions, such as embarrassed or bored, are a little trickier than hot and cold, which is a little more concrete. So it's great for a range of types of learners. And here are the different pieces again. And a label for the baggie. So you'll laminate these and match them in the pages as— the student will match them in the pages as you read. This was a product preview of Why Do You Feel? by theautismhelper.com.
