A timeout social story book teaches kids what to do during timeout by removing attention for problem behaviors. The book uses interactive elements to help students practice appropriate actions, and a closing section guides them back to class when timeout ends.

Timeout can be a really effective intervention for attention-maintained behaviors. Some problem behaviors continue because students are getting attention for it. So if you're removing attention and putting a student in timeout, they're not going to be able to get peer or adult attention anymore. So it's a great way to remove that consequence. So when you're using a timeout procedure, it's great to put some structure and rules in place, and I really love using this Timeout Social Story Adapted book. This would be great to keep right in your timeout area, hang it on a hook or put it on a shelf or under the chair so it's there when you need it. This is great for students that can read because they can read it by themselves while they're in timeout. This is something you maybe want to practice ahead of time, but during that timeout have them review it on their own. And it kind of goes through the different rules of what you do in timeout. There's interactive pieces, so there's something the student can engage with as opposed to just text that they're going to read. So they have to identify things they should do in timeout. Things they should not do, things they should be saying. So it's really modeling and practicing the appropriate way to behave in timeout, um, and what to do next time. Uh, when you're having a child exit timeout, you really want to have them be engaging in appropriate behaviors when they exit. So this is a nice way to kind of transition them back into the class and have like a finalizing moment for that timeout. Um, so this is one of my Social Story Adapted books, the Getting a Timeout version.
