Video Tutorial of Community Worker Adapted Book

Sasha shows how to make an adapted book for students with autism using sheet protectors and Velcro. Students match pictures of community workers to their workplaces by reading prompts like "Where do you work?" The repetitive structure builds language skills while the picture matching requires inference.

Hi, this is Sasha from theautismhelper.com, and this is a video tutorial of my Where Do You Work book as part of my Community Workers social studies packet. So I just want to give a brief tutorial on how to set this up in case you aren't familiar with Adapt-A-Books. So I've been really low on laminating, so I've just been putting all my pages in top-loading sheets, and this works perfectly fine. So you only really have to laminate one page, which I really like. I like to Velcro the baggie with the pieces right to the inside of the book. That way it's always attached and we don't lose it. Sometimes my kids use a Velcro board and sometimes we just kind of lay out the picture options, but basically what you're going to do is you're going to read each page, or the child can read the page, and then they will match the correct location. So there is a Velcro, hard Velcro spot here in the box, and then the student will find, you know, he is a doctor, he works in the hospital, and matches it. And then you go to the next page. Each page runs the same setup and same structure, which I like because some of my lower verbal students then sooner able to kind of mimic the words, like, where do you work? Because it kind of follows the same routine, like, I work in the, so it kind of follows that same word pattern, which I think is really helpful for our kids with less verbal abilities. So each picture will match, she is a chef, she works in the restaurant. So it's not a direct match, which I kind of like, 'cause it is great for our lower verbal kids, again, to work on making inferences and that higher level matching skill. So there's 10 different pages with 10 different community workers. Um, yep, this is it. This was a video tutorial of my Where Do You Work adapted book, part of the Community Workers social studies packet from theautismhelper.com.
