Gina from The Autism Helper shows how to teach WH questions and object labeling using real items like food and animals instead of just toys. She recommends limiting choices to three items and explicitly modeling each task by naming the target and guiding the child through the request.

Hi everyone, this is Gina from The Autism Helper. I wanted to go along with the WH and the labeling of objects that I've been talking about during this vlog, and I wanted to show you what I was talking about about using real objects. So for most of our families, I think they would have, you know, some toys in the house, or they can use real things such as food to help with categorizing and labeling objects. So for example, right here you could use the WH cards that I showed you earlier to kind of prompt yourself or your, your parents to ask these WH questions. So for example, in this one I would say find the food. And so obviously the cookie is the only one out of all 4 of these that is the food. You could lessen the field and only put 3 things in there, making the options between the food and the animals just 2. You can also do vehicles and maybe have a smaller field. So you can make it all mostly food and then say, "Find the vehicle," and they would know to take the bus. And then again, you might have to model this more, like, "Find the vehicle," and say they take, you know, the cookie because they like cookies. Say, "Vehicle bus," and have them take that one. And just model showing this because a lot of times our kids just don't have the skills yet. They don't understand what direction we're asking them, so you might have to teach them what you're talking about first.
