It is an instructional monologue by a single presenter teaching the "memory pegging" (pegword) technique for memorizing ordered lists and recalling item positions. The speaker demonstrates peg words (1=ton, 2=zoo, 3=tree, 4=door, 5=hive, 6=sticks) and shows how to apply them to remember the first six U.S. presidents (George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison) with vivid mental images.

Welcome to day 2 of the 5-day memory improvement challenge. Today I want to speak about a method called memory pegging, and with this method you can remember a list and you can remember any item on the list. You know what number it is and what it was. So let's just do the first 6 numbers on the list, and I want you to remember these numbers. Repeat them after me, please, if you can. One ton. 1, turn. 2, zoo. 3, tree. 4, door. 5, hive. And 6, sticks. So let's say our task is to remember the first 6 presidents of the USA in sequence and to know which is which number. The first president is George Washington, so we've got to associate 1, ton, with Washington. So imagine you're washing a 1-ton weight. See, that's the picture in your mind. You're washing a 1-ton weight. Number 1, George Washington. 2, zoo. What do we put in the zoo? We imagine Adam and Eve in a cage with a snake in the zoo. There they are, they're eating the apple. Adam and Eve, John Adams, 2nd President of the USA. Number 3, tree. And I imagine a plane, an airplane crashed into the tree. I have a picture in my mind of a tree with a plane crashed into it. I'm thinking Jefferson Airplane. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd president of the USA. Now, you may use a different association. Jefferson Airplane were a very successful pop group from the USA in the 1960s and '70s. You may use the Jefferson Memorial or some other association, but I use the airplane. 4 door. What's behind the door? We open a door and we're looking down Madison Avenue in New York, in Manhattan, a beautiful avenue. And Madison Avenue is full of advertising agencies. We tend to think of the advertising agencies of Madison Avenue. So that's the picture I have in my mind. I open the door and I'm looking down Madison Avenue. James Madison was the 4th President of the United States. So let's just soak that in for the moment. 1, ton, George Washington. 2, zoo, John Adams. Adam and Eve in the zoo. 3, tree, Jefferson airplane, an airplane stuck in the tree, Thomas Jefferson. 4, door, we open the door, Madison Avenue, James Madison. So that's enough for today. If you focus on that, we'll do the other 2, and I'll give you some more hints in the next video in this series.
