This content was created by Paul Sloane. This content was uploaded by Paul Sloane. This is a YouTube video titled "Jerome, Goldilocks and the Three Bears" (recorded May 12, 2013). The excerpt is a short interview/elicitation in which an adult interviewer asks a young child, Jerome Phelps, to retell the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Jerome gives an informal, fragmented retelling (entering the bears' house, eating porridge, breaking a chair, sleeping in a bed, and being discovered). The clip reads like a child storytelling or speech-sample interview rather than a formal presentation.

Hello, so today is Sunday, May 12th, 2013, and I want to interview Jerome Phelps and ask him a little bit about Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. So Jerome, tell me a little bit about Goldilocks. Was she a good girl or a naughty girl?
Naughty.
Why?
Because she went into somebody's house and they Not there.
She went into somebody else's house. Whose house was it?
The 3 Bears.
And where were they?
Um, they were off for a walk.
And what— she went in the house, that was naughty. What did she do? What was the first thing she did?
Um, they— see, that was the first problem, and that was Daddy's bed, and that was too hot. And then the second one, and that was too cold. And then the last one, and then that one was just like associated to a wall.
She ate it all up, and whose porridge was that?
Baby Bear's.
The Baby Bear's porridge. What did she do next? Did she sit in their chairs?
Yeah. First it was Daddy's, and now it was too comfy, and after that it was too—
Too hard, wasn't it?
Yeah.
And then Mummy Bear's chair. And then what happened when she sat in the Baby Bear's chair?
Um, she broke it.
She broke it. So what did she do then?
She went upstairs.
She went upstairs?
Yeah, and then she came in the room and then she saw 3 beds. Then she got the first bed and that was too hard.
Yes.
And then she lay in the 6th bed and no one was there.
Yes.
And then she lay in the 6th and 8th bed and no one was there. So she moved to the window so she could see the birds singing outside. And then she climbed into it and then she fell asleep.
She fell asleep in somebody else's bed?
Yeah, and then she couldn't hear the birds come back.
The bears came back?
Yeah.
And what happened?
Um, and Daddy Bear said, someone's been eating my porridge. And then Mummy Bear said, someone's been eating my porridge. And Daddy Bear said, someone's been eating my porridge. And they ate it all up.
They ate it all up. Was she pleased or not pleased? The baby bear?
Um, not please.
Oh dear.
So I think I did knock and they did it for not being seen by the bear.
All right, what happened when they went upstairs?
Um, first they came in the sitting room.
Oh, all right.
And then Daddy Bear said, someone's been sitting in my chair. And Mummy Bear said, someone's been Sitting in my chair. Maybe there's someone been sitting in my chair and they have broken it all up.
Oh dear. Then what happened?
They came upstairs.
Yes.
And then they come into the room and then Daddy's bed, like someone's been sleeping in my bed. And Mum's bed, like someone's been sleeping in my bed. And Baby Bear said, look, someone's sleeping in my bed and they're still there.
Still there?
Yeah. And Goldilocks didn't hear them come upstairs.
She didn't?
No.
But did she wake up then?
Yeah.
And what happened?
She looked at the bed.
Was she surprised?
No.
No?
Because she— and then she went back downstairs. And then she went back to her house and the bed didn't follow her.
They didn't follow her?
No.
Alright. Is it a nice story, that? Do you like that story? Would you go in somebody else's house and sleep in somebody else's bed?
Yeah, because I don't like being on my own.
You don't like being on your own. Okay, thank you, Jerome.
