A negotiation tactic frames requests as conditional exchanges: "If you, then I." The other person acts first, creating reciprocity. Examples include offering ice cream for a clean room or ordering in bulk if a seller cuts price by 5%.

This is another in my magic phrases series, and this phrase is very powerful in negotiation. If you're ever dealing with somebody, whether it's buying a car or negotiating a pay rise or anything else, and it goes like this. The phrase is, if you, then I. So you might say to your little boy, if you clean your room, then I will give you an ice cream. If you reduce your price by 5%, then I will order 100 units. And if you, then I has a sequence to it. They have to act first. There's an obligation on them, and then you will do something in return. And that creates a powerful form of persuasion which will help you to negotiate in any situation much more effectively.
