Here's a magic phrase which will help you to benefit from criticism, and it's different from the other magic phrases because this is one that you only say to yourself. So when we're criticized, we can react in a number of ways. Some people get very defensive and argue back. You say I'm not good at accepting criticism, you're quite wrong, I'm very good at it. That's not the way to do it. Other people take it very, very personally. I know somebody who was criticized and then Went in the restroom and started crying. And they find it crushes their confidence. So when you're criticized, no matter whether it's very strong or very mild, what you say to the person is, thank you, I understand. And then you say the magic phrase to yourself, which is this: there might be something in what they say which will help me to improve. So you're not accepting that they're fully right and you're fully wrong. You're protecting your ego. But you are acknowledging that there's something in there, there's a germ of an idea which can help you to be better. There might be something in what they say that can help me to improve. And you think about that and use it as a starting point to get better.
