On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand's driver made a wrong turn in Sarajevo and accidentally placed the car in front of Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian nationalist who assassinated the couple. That single mistake triggered World War I and, by extension, World War II.
Chapters
On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were driving through Sarajevo.
Their driver took a wrong turn. He went down a street which took him straight into the path of a conspirator, a radical called Gavrilo Princip, who shot the Archduke and his wife. And that tragic event led to a whole series of happenings and ultimately to the First World War. Which laid the seeds for the Second World War. So you could say both of those great tragedies can be traced back to an unexpected event, a driver taking a wrong turn. And unexpected events shape our world, they shape history, they shape our lives, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. But they're really important. They're important in business, they're important in your life, they're important in society. And these are themes that I explore in in my new book, The Art of Unexpected Solutions.
