Here's the thing most people get wrong. The online OCI form is only half the process. Miss the second half and your application goes nowhere. In this video, I will walk you through the complete OCI process from Australia, start to finish, the right way. Welcome back to the Visa Mint, your guidance for Indian visas, OCI card, and everything to do with traveling and living across borders. If you are an Indian-origin resident in Australia, looking to apply for your Overseas Citizen of India card, you are in the right place. The OCI process can feel confusing— 2 different portals, jurisdiction rules, document checklist, and the mandatory in-person VFS appointment. So we have broken it down into 2 simple parts. Part 1, how to apply for your OCI application on an official government portal of India. And part 2, how to book your VFS Global appointment in Australia and complete your in-person submission. By the end, you will know exactly what to do in what order and how to avoid the mistakes that get application delayed or Let's get started. Let's start with part first, the online OCI application on the official OCI portal. Step one, register on the OCI portal. Go to the official OCI portal and create your account using your surname and given name as per your passport, date of birth, email ID, nationality, and mobile number. Make sure you use an active email address because OTP is an important specification. Application communication may be sent there. After registration, log in and start a new OCI registration. Select the appropriate application category such as self or other family member and choose Australia as your country of application. Then select the correct Indian mission based on your Australian residential jurisdiction. Do not select a mission or VFS center simply because it is closer to you. Use the jurisdiction applicable to your residential state. Enter your personal details exactly as it appears on your current foreign passport. This includes your name, date of birth, place of birth, Nationality, marital status, and current passport details. You will also need to provide your parents' details and where applicable, your spouse details and details establishing your Indian origin for OCI eligibility. Step 4, enter your occupation, employer details, current Australian residential address, postcode, telephone number, and mobile number. Review the information carefully and save the application before continuing. Step 5, upload photo and signature. Upload your recent photograph and signature according to the OCI portal specification. The current OCI systems require as applicant photo as signatures, images to meet specified dimensions and file size requirements. So check the portal's latest photo specification before uploading. Step 6, complete the remaining background and security-related questions. Depending on your application, you may be asked about previous OCI applications, previous nationality, citizenship details, criminal proceedings, relatives in India, and how your present nationality was acquired. Hence, answer every question accurately and consistently with your supporting documents. Step 7, upload all documents required for your specified OCI eligibility category. Common documents may include your current valid foreign passport, citizenship or naturalized certificate, proof of Australian residential address, cancelled surrender Indian passport and surrender certificate. If you previously had an Indian passport, proof of Indian origin or OCI eligibility, marriage certificate where applicable, other supporting documents required for your particular category. The exact document list depends on your OCI eligibility route. So follow the applicable checklist rather than uploading a generic set of documents. The OCI portal requires the supporting documents to be uploaded online. Step 8, before submitting, carefully review your entire application. Check your name, date of birth, passport number, nationality, Australian address, parent details, spouse details, Indian origin documents, photographs, signature, and uploaded documents. Remember, once the application is submitted, correcting an error can become much more difficult. Step 9, when everything is correct, Click final submit. After submission, save your OCI application file reference number. Download and print the complete application and keep a copy of document upload confirmation. Online submission alone does not complete the OCI application process in Australia. Now that your OCI application is submitted online and you have got your file reference number saved, you are halfway there.
