A short YouTube conversation between Amber Hollingsworth and another speaker about how parents should respond when the other parent says hurtful things to a child. The speakers emphasize age-appropriate responses (younger children vs. older children) and warn that consistently telling a child that a parent loves them while they are treated badly can amount to gaslighting.
When the other parent, if they say something, do something that hurts their feelings. Did you say, well, you know, Daddy loves you? He didn't really mean that. Like, where does that fall in the enable?
That's. That's a massive question. I think, first of all, it depends to a large degree on the ages of the children. I think 10 and up, they can understand that dad has a problem, you know, three and four. No. But I don't think you should sort of go against, like, what you just gave. Like, well, you know, Daddy loves you and he didn't mean it. I think you should say, I'm sorry Daddy said that, but he did say it. And so I don't think you should minimize that. I think the age of the children is paramount in that decision, though.
Right. Because in some ways, and I actually heard somebody else say this, it's another YouTuber that does mental health stuff. I never thought about it before, but it's like, if you're constantly told things like that, you know, your mom really loves you, but they're treating you badly, it's a form of gaslighting.
