Willpower runs on metabolic fuel in your brain and depletes throughout the day, which is why you make healthy choices at breakfast but cave by dinner. Sleep and food replenish it. Design your life around this constraint instead of fighting it.

The next really essential concept for you to understand is how willpower actually works. Because once you really understand how willpower works, you can create systems or ways of interacting that work within that system, and it's going to get you such better results than you have than the things you've done in the past. So first thing you need to know about willpower is that it is something in your brain that runs on little ATP that's like sugar molecules that run around in your blood. Basically, it has to have fuel, like everything else in your body. And so when you sleep at night and you've eaten, those are the things that replenish your willpower. But it's ultimately like gas in a gas tank. It will run out. Usually when you wake up in the mornings, you have more willpower. And by the time you get to the end of your day, you're kind of running on low and sometimes empty. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. When you wake up and you're like, okay, I'm going to conquer this day. I'm going to get all this stuff done. I'm going to eat healthy, I'm going to exercise, I'm going to be nice. I want to get my work done, all that stuff. And then by the end of the day, you're, like, sitting there and you're like, I'm just going to eat cookies for dinner and veg out and binge on Netflix. That's because you ran out of willpower.
