Do you remember the name of your first kiss?
Yes.
You do? You're actually reliving the kiss, aren't you?
I am so.
You are, aren't you? I can tell. I actually see David. I see you kissing David with his nice brown hair, right? Yeah? Yeah? Think of your first car. It was a '95? A '95, yeah. A Toyota Corolla? No! What the hell? Picture yourself on a dream date with this woman, and are you guys walking along the beach? Yeah? Yeah? And you got your hand— do you have your hand going down to Kim Kardashian's booty?
Yeah?
I've been going out and the date seems to go really well, and then suddenly I don't hear from them.
Amanda has arranged to meet Saeed at a popular first dates restaurant. I've briefed her to just act as she normally would so I can observe her and see what's going wrong.
Um, but do you travel a lot?
Okay, I travel for work a lot.
He's doing a ploy where he's saying that he travels a lot in order to get out of seeing her later with a follow-up date.
Mexico, Cuba, Peru.
You see his arms are crossed like that? You'll notice when he's talking about himself, he's more closed in. She talks, he opens up. He wants her to talk more about herself. Amanda's fallen into the typical first date trap of deflecting from herself, asking a lot of questions, and that's probably why she's still looking for a date. We need to pull Amanda back. I need to talk to her.
It's going really good.
Okay. Do you like him?
Yeah, I think I'd see him again.
'Cause I don't think at this point he would see you again.
Really?
But I'm gonna tell you how you can turn it around. Okay, first of all, let me point this out. When you were asking him questions, he closed up.
Right, I was too intense.
That was early on, wasn't it?
Was I interrogating?
You were.
You were tapping into his fears. You're pouncing on him. Right now, there needs to be some chemistry. Amanda, tell him that you're really into hands. Reach out your hand, and let's see if he'll let you hold onto it. You can hold on. People always say, actually, stop it. We're going to do a pattern interrupt here, where she just does something unusual and see how he reacts. Amanda, take off your scarf and hand it to him.
I think it suits you. I think it's a nice color. I hope it smells like me.
Notice how everything has loosened up a lot right now. It's more like a little bit of a party atmosphere. That's the good, that's what we want.
There was a turning point, I think, a few turning points in the date that changed it and made it better at the end.
After Randy gave me his little feedback, it started to be a little voice in my ear. I felt like I knew what I was doing.
Yeah, I'd like to see her again. I think I'm pretty confident there'll be a second date.
With affairs of the heart, emotions run high. It's much easier to read people's nonverbal cues. Now, Saeed wasn't purposely trying to mislead Amanda, but what about someone who's more skilled in the art of deception? This is how we're gonna do it. You're thinking of a number between 1 and 6, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna ask you a question, and each time I ask you the question, you're gonna say no. At one point, you're gonna be lying. Are you thinking of the number 1?
No.
Are you thinking of the number 2?
No.
Are you thinking of the number 3?
No.
Are you thinking of the number 4?
No.
Are you thinking of the number 5?
No.
You liar. You're thinking of the number 5. All right.
Goddamn it.
$50.
If I'm not able to tell you the number, that you're thinking of, you get the $50.
Okay.
This time I'm not gonna count, you're not gonna count. Just think of the number. $50 if I'm wrong. What I'm getting is that you, you actually changed your mind at a moment. You chose a number, you thought about it just for a split second, changed your mind. Is that true?
Yes.
And interestingly enough, you chose a number that's half the value of the first one that you were gonna choose. The first one you were gonna choose was 4, but then you changed your mind and chose number 2. Uh, yes, that's, that's right. Wow, that's insane. I'm Randy Charach. I can't read your mind, but I bet I know what you're thinking.
