Hi, this is Rita Hogan, and welcome to the Dogs Are Individuals podcast. I'm a clinical canine herbalist, and I've been practicing for over 20 years. This podcast is all about your dog through an herbal lens. So let's get to it and dive right in.
Welcome to another episode of Shorts. I'm Reeta Hogan, your host, and I am answering some questions on the podcast that were written into me. The first question is from T. Rosen. She's asking if the direction of her dog's hair has changed, basically, and she wants to know if this is an issue. And I say yes. When hair changes direction, kind of oddly, you usually are having some weakness in the back end. Could be a kidney issue as well, or something in the joint or in the fascia. And. And I would find a chiropractor in your area and go to the chiropractor first to get an assessment for your dog. But I definitely think it's a warning sign of something deeper. I have another question about collapsed trachea. Roanne writes in and says, thanks for the podcast. Would you consider doing an episode on collapsing trachea or coughing? I would definitely consider doing a full episode on tracheal issues. But as far as collapsed trachea is concerned, there's a few things to know. So collapsed trachea is basically the windpipe of your dog known as the trachea, and it's part of the respiratory system, and it gets too relaxed. Okay. So it's a state of. It's a tissue state of relaxation. And the cartilage rings of the trachea get really weak, and they can collapse and cause the airway to narrow, making it difficult to breathe. And some more. Some dogs are more predisposed to collapsed trachea, like toy poodles, Chiwas, Chihuahua. I love Chihuahuas, by the way. Pomeranians had one. Her name was Eileen. Yorkshire terriers, pugs. But a lot of dogs can get collapsed trachea, so it doesn't have to be just those breeds. Usually it comes on about between, like, 6 and 10 years of age, but it can have some underlying causes, like obesity or heart disease or cigarette smoke can be one of them. Cushing's disease can be a sign, like, can be an underlying issue with collapsed trachea. But how do you know your dog has collapsed trachea? Lots of abnormal breathing, you know, rapid breathing, abnormal breathing, difficulty breathing, changes in breathing, lethargy because you're not getting enough oxygen. You can get tired sometimes it can get real bad, and your dog can pass out. And we don't want that to happen. I think when you go to the vet, they're gonna, you know, they'll do some X rays, they'll look at your dog's trache. They might insert like a little camera down their throat which will, which will require anesthesia. But it just depends on how far you want to go. One of the things that I love to use for collapsed trachea is a company called paw healer@pawhealer.com and they have what's called a trachea syrup and it works really well. Another remedy that I like for collapse trachea is fig phytoembryonic therapy. I find that also works well. It works good for mega esophagus too. There's a remedy from Myco Dog which is kind of related to CBD dog health. Angelina Ardolino, she makes a good mushroom elixir called Breathe that I like for collapsed trachea. I also like CBD oil for collapsed trachea. But if you go into my energetics course at k9herbalism.com, you can look up the energetic pattern of, or the tissue state and a tissue pattern called relaxation. And any type of like dealing with relaxation, which is a whole nother conversation really will help with collapsed trachea as well. Some other remedies that are on the market that I have found effective. Well, Paw Healer has another kind of like a pill form called trachea support and phlegm heat. That's a very good remedy. Pawheeler.com is. It's just a really good resource to use. It's traditional Chinese medicine, which I am not a traditional Chinese medicine herbalist. But I do use Paw Healer in some of my protocols and I find a lot of their formulas very effective if they're well indicated. Pet well Being has a product called Throat Gold and that's a really good one too. It's a good one. And then 5th and Phyto has a cough sootherapy, which is good. Dr. Judy Morgan of Naturally Healthy Pets, I believe it's drjudymorgan.com she has a great article about collapsing trachea and I will share that on the notes of my website. But basically it's drjudymorgan.com blog collapsing trachea. Really great article. All about collapsing trachea from a vet perspective, which I am not. But she has some good natural resources in there about, you know, avoiding foods that cause phlegm and that's important. Like dairy is a no, no. And then foods that promote A decrease in phlegm production. She's got some really good environmental kind of supports like HEPA filters and you know, don't use scented candles around your dog or artificial scents. You need to vacuum and keep things at a minimum. She goes over some calming flower essences and homeopathics and different stuff like that. It's a great article, so check that out for collapsing trachea. So if you guys have any other questions for the podcast, please write in and I will answer them on the podcast.
