Rita Hogan, a clinical canine herbalist, and Leith Henry discuss what they learned at the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association conference. They cover herbal dog nutrition, regenerative veterinary medicine, and holistic pet health products for dog owners curious about alternative approaches to pet care.
Hi, this is Rita Hogan and welcome to the Dogs are Individuals podcast. I'm a clinical canine herbalist and I've been practicing for over 20 years. This podcast is all about your dog.
Through an herbal lens.
So let's get to it and dive right in.
Hey, Rita here. I might sound a little sleepy because I attended the American Holistic Veterinary Medical association conference this past weekend and it was a lot, but I am catching up on my sleep. I wanted to share a few things with you from the weekend that absolutely blew my mind. And so I'm going to do that on the podcast today. One of the things I got to do is hang out with Kelly and Billy of Green Juju. And we were talking, talking about, oh my God, what weren't we talking about? We were talking about dogs and pugs and Frenchies and bam, bam. The little Frenchie that passed away of Kelly's and the little pug that passed away of Billy's, and we were talking about longevity and health and it was a lot of fun. They did a little interview with me and I, like, Kelly and I were talking and I don't know why I didn't realize this, but one of, one of the things that is interesting about Green juju food is one, they're an organ based food and two, they don't have added fish oil. And I was like, you know, you guys don't have added fish oil? I guess I never really registered with me. I'm like, you know, like, for instance, like the beef recipe, it has beef heart, beef liver, beef kidney, beef bone, organic kale, organic kelp and vitamin E. That's amazing. And here's the thing. The reason why they don't have added fish oil is that they pay attention to so critically to sourcing that the meats that they source and the animals that provide for the food have good ratios of essential fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acids specifically with a good balance of omega 6 like they're supposed to have when they're grass fed and grass finished. So and that is why they don't have a poultry food, because it's really hard to find any type of chicken or poultry that isn't grain fed. So people are like, well, why don't they have a chicken food? Well, that's why. And what's important about that is that there are a lot of dogs that are sensitive to fish oils and especially dogs that have like yeast infections. And this is a wonderful food for yeast infections, even if you feed it as a supplemental food. Like, as far as just putting A little topping on your own food to enrich the nutrition of the food you're feeding. So I just found that fascinating and I was like, oh my God, I didn't even realize that. So the sourcing for green juju is currently impeccable. So I love that. Thank you. Green juju and you know, feed animals also deserve to live a good life while they're here on this planet being fed, you know, and species appropriate diet and getting sun and air and community with their other animals. So I appreciate that. Okay, I'm going to tell you what I learned at the hhvm. Ah, let's see. A American Holistic A H V M A. So it was in Reno. Yes, it's true. I went to Reno. Reno, Nevada. I think next year it's at. It's in Florida. Florida. It's in Florida. And so I did a little bit of networking for my upcoming book comes out on the 4th of February. If you have not ordered my book, get to it, get to it. You can order it anywhere or pre order it anywhere you purchase books. Just tell them I'd like to pre order the Herbal Dog by Rita Hogan and it will come to you. Oh and I just wanted to share with you because I'm sharing personally as well as professionally sewing, trying hard about the personal shares. So I got some really amazing recommendations for my book by some veterinarians and some, you know, it's just so humbling to get a really nice recommendation. And also I got a great recommendation by Gregory Tilford who is a mentor of mine and Cheryl Swartz who is also, you know, both of them have been silent mentors. Of course I've been following their work for a really long time and just, you know, so full circle and it's just really humbling and I absolutely adore both of them and appreciate them taking the time on short notice to look and read my book and give me some feedback. And it's been wonderful. So just letting you know. So the way the conference is set up, it's all day lectures and then they have some vendor, like a big vendor room also where you eat lunch and things like that. And I went with my business partner, Leith Henry and she's awesome. You'll be hearing from her next year. She'll be making appearances on the pod here. But we went together and we were so welcomed, which I really appreciated because you know, you're in a room full of vets and it's nice to be welcomed and people were very nice and kind and I got to see, like, Dr. Odette with animal Biome. She was hanging out with Animal Biome. I got to see the sweet ladies from Independent Pet Labs, which we're going to have in the store. I'm excited about that. That's gonna happen probably in November, December. We're gonna bring those on. All that testing for you guys in the store, get excited. Then I hung out with Joni of Real Mushrooms and Lee Carroll. Now, Lee Carroll is a. I definitely would say one of the foremost experts in mushroom science in the world. And he's an herbalist, and I would call him a medical herbalist. He's very much into constituents and research and all of that stuff that I need other people to do for me. I like reading research papers and stuff, but I'm very much into traditional herbalism, so talking to him was fascinating. He is a delight. And such a snappy dresser. Oh, my God, Such a snappy dresser. He had amazing glasses that, you know, on the shelf, you'd be like, those are the. Just. Those are not okay on his face. They were fabulous. Like, I'm just like, how is it? How does that happen? It's kind of like my mom. She's 94. Her name's Lil, and we call her Granny. But Granny can take clothes that would look horrible on a hanger. She puts them on and again, menu fique. Menu fique. She's amazing that way. So her and Lee probably were separated at birth sometime, but Lil got accelerated to age 94 because Lee Carroll is not that old. So anyways, we got to hang out with Lee, Carol, and Joanie from Real Mushrooms, and that was a delight. I listened to Lee's lectures for a good, I think, three to four hours. He was lecturing at the conference and just mind blowing, Mind blowing. So much good stuff coming out in the world of mushroom science and health and longevity. Ergothioneine is a constituent of mushrooms and especially oyster mushrooms. And the research coming out on that is just amazing. And the longevity that can improve it. It can provide our bodies, our dog's bodies. And it's not super expensive, which is great. And you can purchase oyster mushrooms in the store and cook them up and feed them to you and your dog. Make mushroom broths with it or purchase it as a supplement in. Well, you can purchase it as a supplement in my store, but you can purchase it as a supplement@realmushrooms.com but which is another lovely sponsor of the pod. But that was super fun. I had a great time. We did a couple interviews, too. So it Was definitely a work trip. But I want to tell you about something that I saw at the conference that blew my mind. It blew my head right off my shoulders. I mean, just boom, she gone. So Leith and I were walking around, we saw these two cowboys. You know, I think only one of them had a hat on. His name was Chip, he's from Idaho, and his business partner's name is Brandon and he's from Arizona and just blown away. Their company is called Anacelle Biotech and it is very strange, but the results of their product was just. I mean, I think the reason why I'm telling you about it is because everyone needs to know about it in case they have a situation where they're thinking about putting their dog down and they don't have to. So again, the company is called Annicell Biotech and it's veterinary only. So you would need to find a vet that can call them and get on board and order the treatment. But most treatments are a one time thing. And so let me tell you about it. So what they do is they use amnion regenerative medicine and it comes from horses who are giving birth. And no, they're not giving birth just for the product. This is something that's thrown out when a horse foals, when they have a baby, a mare. I have a horse named Moosi and I love horses immensely. And so I went over with them basically how they get their amnion. And what happens is they have this foaling project and locally, horses who are going to foal the. Well, the people that own the horses bring the foals, not the foals, the horses that are going to foal to their farm. And Brandon and veterinarian help deliver the foal and the amniocentesis and the sac and the whole thing are taken, because that's usually what you're gonna throw out. It's taken to a lab, kind of like an organ donor, you know, it's preserved, it's taken to the lab right away and tested. And then I believe they freeze dry it and they also turn it into an injectable liquid. And then the mama and the foal are taken care of, they have an enrichment program and then they're put out in the pasture, if that's appropriate, for a few days. And then they get picked up and brought back home to their, to their farm. So I think that's a really beautiful way to collect these types of like amniotic materials. And the reason why they use amnion is, it's a regenerative material and it's been used for a long time in human medicine. But definitely I think the collection and preservation had limitations. So for the last decade, using the amniotic membrane like it's the amniotic membrane and fluid products basically is what they're using. They have seen no side effects and it's 100% bioavailable in the body. And they have tons of published literature which I really appreciate. And I saw the little pieces of the freeze dried or the dried like little sheets that they use to heal like the most nastiest wounds I've ever seen. And also the little injectables. And it's a one time treatment from what I can understand, which is really interesting. So it's made of collagen and laminin and elastin and proteoglycans, I believe that word is. And glycoproteins and glycol. Glyco, what is it? Samnioglycans. And it's all big fancy words I understand, but these are all the building blocks of tissue and it helps keep inflammation from progressing into disease or it helps the body heal. Cause when the inflammation won't shut off, the body can't heal. It's kind of like how I work with animals with gut problems. We gotta shut off that inflammation and then the gut can heal. So again, it's totally bioavailable and it's all from biomaterials, which is just really awesome because let me tell you what it can do. So I watched their entire presentation even though and they were very nice to even give me the time of day because I'm not a vet. But you know, I know a lot of vets and I know a lot of people that could benefit from this therapy. Because the reason why I was excited about it and also a little bit sad for a minute was that this therapy could have saved my pug's eye. Which you know is sad because Vicki would love to have her eye back. She's a one eyed pug. So in the video that he was showing me with stopping and starting and stopping and starting it, he showed me a little donkey that got run over by a car. His hoof was completely severed, so he had a stump and they were going to put him down and they used the dried sheet of this amnio fluid, right? Or tissue, and they used a dried sheet and they applied it to his leg and in 200 days they grew him back a complete hoof that attached to the stump through this, this like, let's just say graph. And he was new as a canoe in 200 days. That is amazing. And then he showed me another case where dog was in wheelchair and was walking within three weeks of an injection into the area that was damaged. So this is regenerative medicine and it is fabulous. And I, you know, I really want to take a visit to Arizona to this, you know, to see like how this kind of works. And I met a lovely vet there who has been using it in her practice and said that, you know, she's been using it for bad kidney disease and it has been working. And she also healed a cat's allergies, that it was like medication resistant allergies, just terrible, terrible life for this little cat. And it healed it with one injection. So like there are a lot of applications and it's not too expensive, it's not completely drastically expensive. And that is interesting as well. So I think that you can look at the research. Let me tell you that the it is anacelbiotech.com and the owner's name is Brandon and he's absolutely lovely. And then his business partner is Chip. And again, he lives in Idaho and he was an absolute, just, I don't know, I don't even know how to describe him. He was just a this like salt of the earth person. Both of them were so, so down to earth and, and kind and interactive. And they have, they also have an ocular product. And I was just like, yes, my little dogs, I definitely most likely could have been healed with their can of cell. It's called an ocular. And they make products for cats, horses and dogs. And it all does come from mares. And again, they're not harmed in the collection of this tissue that would ordinarily be thrown out. And I just think that these are things that we need to know. We need to know this because if your dog has a wound that won't heal, also it's wonderful for Parvo because it's very antimicrobial and it can heal things like Parvo in a few days. That's what I've been told. Now I don't wanna find out, but it could be an option. And a lot of people like, well, I've never heard of that, you know. Well, you have now. So the things that it's used for are like disastrous injuries, again, things that won't heal, spinal problems, spondylosis, spondylitis, dogs that are, you know, you can try it for a dog that is paralyzed, severe kidney disease, protein Dumping severe allergies that you know cannot, like normal things aren't working. And again, what you do is you have your veterinarian reach out to them. They will get on the phone with your veterinarian and tell them exactly what to do if the dog, cat or horse is a candidate for their product. Okay. And if they can help and they will ship it to your vet and they will tell them again how to inject it or how to wrap it with the material. And it doesn't require multiple treatments. You know, I would say, you know, for most part it may require multiple treatments to like grow an entire hoof back. But I don't know the, like the entire story about growing the hoof back. Like if it was multiple treatments or one day treatment. But I personally think that it's, I mean it's practically a miracle. I mean what I saw was just, I mean I had to sit down. I had to sit down. It was like, oh my God. But I really do think that for the most part it is one treatment for many things. I mean, I guess if it's an absolutely severe injury, it may need more than one treatment. But again, from what I understand it is not that expensive compared to like surgery. I'm just kind of floored by it. So Anacel Biotech, I would check them out and just write it down in your memory banks. Like this is an option that you could try for something that's severe and especially those things of like, I'm sorry, we can't help you, we're going to have to put your dog down. I don't think that any other product at the conference hit me so hard. Like Anacel, I was just like, oh my God. I did get to get some certain things like facts that I did not know at the conference. Like for one, if you use statins, it depletes the body of Coq 10. I didn't know that I'm not on statins, but my mom is and I'm really GLAD she's on Coq 10. My brother is on them and he's working to get off them, but did not know that. So he is going to go on CoQ10. So I found that out. Oh, a couple other things in the all natural dog world I did not know and you know, I feel silly, I feel silly about this. I didn't know that all provide which is a dog food, a good dog food company had raw food. I thought it was just gently cooked. So they have raw food for cats and dogs. Didn't know that Spent some time at the table there talking. I also got to spend time with Chelsea and Roxanne from Solutions Pet Food. That was awesome. Checked out some of their herbal blends that they have come out with and are on the market now. Interesting. And they're having a lot of good success with their line, their fermented food line. One of my dogs Eats Solutions. And then Chelsea gave me some samples to take home of her herbal products. And I'm gonna, you know, check those out. After I get back, I'm leaving again for the Feed Real conference in San Diego. And then I'm on my way to Florida for the Dr. Judy Morgan event. And then I will be back home for about three months. So I'm looking forward to being in one place before a lot of travel for my book tour next year. I was able to spend a Little Time with Dr. Ruth Roberts. She has a pet health coach program and she's definitely working hard for that program. She's such a nice woman and has done so much for all of us. You know, a definite pioneer in the all natural dog world. And just a lot of reverence for her and her hard work and what she's doing and what she's trying to create to help take some of the burden off of our vets for simple things. Because right now, there are not enough veterinarians to serve the people that need them, especially holistic veterinarians. So her program seems interesting. I'm definitely going to help support her program as much as I can. The lovely folks at Glacier Peak were there. Deb. Deb owns the company of Glacier Peaks, and we spent a little time at their booth checking everything out, seeing if they had any new products. They have some great products. I love their Infla potion and their Herbaprim. They also have an Inflap potion oil, which is nice. They're just a really nice company. They have the, like, Glacier Peaks tests that a lot of people do. They're located in Montana, and their herbal remedies are 100% organic. And I love that. So we did spend a little time there. And then I was really amazed to see David Winston's company, Herbalist and Alchemist, there. That is always interesting when a herbalist, normal herbalist company is in the dog world. I was super happy with that because I love Herbalist Alchemist. They are a line of herbal products for people, but you can use them for your dog. And David Winston is an amazing registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild. Hopefully someday I will get around to registering with Them and they will take me. I'm not sure, but I will try. But yeah, David Winston has been. I mean, he's got like almost 50 years of experience. I mean, he's a. I mean, internationally known lecturer, and he's a founding member of the American Herbalist Guild, which is pretty awe inspiring. He has a ton of books. I have a few of them here on my shelf. And I love herbalist alchemists. So I got to spend a of time lot a little time at that booth and checked them out, which is lovely. I got a lot of stickers from my collection. I am a sticker fanatic. I have this little sticker wall in my office with my favorite stickers on it. I also sat down with this lovely Chinese medicine doctor. I have been looking for, like a Chinese medicine doctor that is like the real deal. And what I mean by the real deal, I mean, that can sit down. That has been doing it forever. You know, my prerequisite is that they need to be basically over the age of like 65. And there he was, sitting at his little booth with his little herbal remedies, and he was adorable. And I sat down with him and he did a full exam on me while I was there. And he helped me. He like, diagnosed me with some things I already knew that I had been working on. And he gave me some traditional Chinese medicine herbs to try for a month. And I'm gonna try them, and I've taken them and I'm working on that. I'm totally open to the universe, you know, leading me in the right direction for Rita renewal. I don't know if what you guys do, but Rita renewal is in full swing over here in Olympia, Washington. So recently I've been doing things to. Well, I'm 53, so I'm trying to kind of like set a baseline on where my health needs to go and what I need to work on. And so the things that I've been doing recently is that I have been. Let's see, I wore a continuous glucose monitor, and I did that for a few months. And that was an eye opener. I definitely eat too much fruit. And at one time, I mean, my God, I love fruit and I eat too much at one time. So I have to like, configure my plate so that my blood sugar doesn't spike as much as it normally does. Because what that does is it builds insulin resistance, and you don't want that. And then, you know, in our families, we all have the thing, right? The thing that kind of runs through your Family. And my. My thing is heart disease. So my mom has heart disease, my brother has heart disease, my sister has heart disease, and my other sister. I don't know. I would have to ask. But we have a few things that run through our family, like ovarian cysts and things like that. And in my mom, in the female line, but definitely what we all have in common is kind of that heart weakness. So he. The. What was his name? I think. Yeah, I think was American Herbal Laboratories, but I forgot. Oh, it's Luke Kua, CUA, PhD, OMD, LAC Doctor of Oriental medicine, acupuncturist and Natural commission certified Chinese herbologist. So he was fun. And I tried to get into a herbalist, a Western herbalist that I really respect, but he is not doing consults right now. So I thought, I'm gonna sit down with this lovely man. And, you know, he did tell me that I need to work on my heart, and he gave me some directions on that, and he gave me some herbs to try for a couple months. And I'm gonna give him a try, especially because I'm gonna be traveling for the next few months. Don't really have time to work on anything. But he told me to create a liver combination for myself. So I'm gonna do that. Gonna do that today. And it's definitely gonna consist of milk thistle phytoembryonic therapy, bilberry phytoembryonic therapy, and most likely crabapple reeder. Renewal, full swing. I highly recommend, you know, if you have been ignoring your health, to pay attention to it before your life forces you to pay attention to it, which my life has in the past. And I try to not to make the same mistakes twice. Because life can get busy, right? It can totally get busy. And we just don't want to, you know, deal with a lot of things like that, but sometimes we have to. So read a renewal, full swing. I'll keep you up to date. I did want to share with you someone I met at the conference, and her name is Dr. Judy Jacek. I'm sure I'm just clobbering that pronunciation. J A S E K. So want to. I had a lovely conversation with her. She was truly a holistic vet. Integrative medical care for pets. I wanted to share with you on that one. And I did mention we saw the beautiful people at Innovative Pet Labs. Katie Philippi. She is awesome. She's the vice president of sales there at Innovative Pet Labs. I was super excited about that. And I met the nice people at Antelope, which they do. The brands like Ark Naturals, Diggin Doggo and Super Snouts, they were super fun is what they were. We had some good laughs with them. And I met Darwin's pet foods. So embarrassed. Do you know they're like a half hour from my house? Didn't know that Darwin is a raw dog food company that is straight to consumer. Darwin's there in Tukwila, Washington. I just couldn't believe it. So anyways, Darwin's pet foods were. They were awesome. And then Qi Dog, which is a traditional Chinese medicine food that has different types of diets. And I checked out their food. I'm gonna add them to theherbaldog.com. my book has a website, herbaldog.com I don't know if I mentioned that, but it does. And I'm gonna add this. I'm gonna make this list of foods that I have collected that I like for the readers of the Herbal Dog so that they have it all in one place. And I think that's super fun too. So I'm just trying to think so anything else that I. That, like, I went crazy for? Well, Earth Buddy, they are one of our old sponsors, Sean, at Earthbuddy. He is coming out with some wonderful products. He's got some. Some good flexibility in his line. We are carrying some of his different CBD formulas in our store now. I'm excited about that. Sean is great. He grows all of his own cannabis and he, you know, from farm to bottle, he can tell you what it is, where it came from, what's in it, what's not in it. Full spectrum. I love his products. So I spent some time with Sean at the show and I always love to see him. He is super fun and really knowledgeable and nice. Oh, and I learned about a new product that I'm going to carry in the store. I don't know when, but I'm gonna add it to my oral dental health course. It's from Super Snouts and it's called Total Wellness Powder. And it helps with dental. It helps with plaque and supporting detoxification, and it's high in antioxidants. It brings down inflammation, it supports the microbiome, and it definitely decreases plaque. I would say tartar and bad breath. And we all love those things. And I love different types of products to choose from for dental health because what works for one dog does not work for another. And it has chlorella, hemp, anastaxin and plasma in it. And they've been having really good results with that product so I'm excited to try it on a few dogs. So I love to try new things on me dogs. I have five of them so there's always something to try. So this was not our normal episode of the podcast, but it is. It's my post AHVMA conference post and I hope you learned a few things in this episode and we are going to do some fun shorts. We went past our hundredth episode. Oh my God we are over 100 episodes. I can't believe it. Next year I am going to have start having some guests on the podcast, but not until I can do that. It's going to be a lot of travel. So probably the middle to the end of next year I'll start having guests here on the podcast. Not all the time, but a few selective people will be joining me here on the podcast. Okay, Real Mushrooms, Green Juju Goodness gracious, thanks to all of my sponsors. I will talk more about goodness gracious on my podcast shorts.
