Rita Hogan, a clinical canine herbalist, talks about self-love and stress reduction through herbal and pet wellness. The conversation weaves personal stories with practical advice on managing stress and personal growth.
Hi, this is Rita Hogan, and welcome to the Dogs Are Individuals podcast. I'm a clinical canine herbalist and I've been practicing for over 20 years. This podcast is all about your dog.
Through an herbal lens.
So let's get to it and dive right in.
Welcome to another edition of our shorts. These are little shareable snippets of information that you and your dog can use that are easy to share. So before we get into it today, I want to thank my sponsor, earthbuddypet.com EarthBuddy has a bunch of products that I just kind of quickly want to go through just to let you know what they have. They have wonderful little soft chews that you can give your dog CBD with if they, you know, are sensitive to having things in their mouth like the full spectrum hemp oil. You know, I wouldn't say that chews work better than the hemp oil rubbed on their teeth. For sure. That that is not true. But they can help for calming and different antioxidant levels. And what's really cool is that Sean at Earthbuddy sent me their glyphosate testings and it was perfect. So some of their products use oat flour in them and oats are usually saturated with glyphosate. Please do not use organic oats. These oats are organically grown, but they, they're not certified organic. So he had testing done on them and third party testing and it really worked out great. So I'm super excited about that. I brought that concern up to Sean of mine and he got on it and made sure that his products were free of glyphosate. They have full spectrum CBD oil. They have mushroom products. Now I'm pretty excited about that. I'm going to get some and give them a try. They have glutathione caps with an antioxidant mix. They've got some senior support. Check their website out. They have skin and paw balms, some apparel. If you get excited about their company and want to wear an Earth Buddy shirt, because I know I do. And just check out their website, earthbuddypet.com and they have given us a generous coupon for my listeners. And that is herbal buddy 20, all lowercase a 2, 0, herbal buddy 20. That's gonna give you 20% off your order. Okay, let's get into it. So I wanted to talk today on this short about. Well, I hate to sound cheesy, but loving yourself and bringing down your stress. This, you know, Rita, what about our dogs? This is about your Dog. This is about yourself. So of course it's about your animals in your house and anyone else who's in there. One of the things that I've noticed in the dog world, I would say for the past, really strong, for the past few years, is people comparing themselves to others. You know, when you do this, you send out a vibration in the universe, in the world of unappreciation and negative self love. And we don't want to do that. You are your own person, you're on your own path. Appreciate yourself. Give yourself credit for being alive in the universe right now. You know, I was talking to a girl a couple days ago and I witnessed her do just something phenomenal that a lot of people were would not do. And that is sit on the phone for like four hours waiting for customer service so that she could get paid because they were having some type of glitch in their system of the job that she works in. And she's sitting there, you know, not appreciating herself at all. And I laid witness to this act of perseverance and I was amazed. I think I would have hung up the phone. I'm not positive because I haven't been in that situation because, you know, as you know, I work for myself. However, that is something to behold. I mean, a lot of people wouldn't sit on hold for that. I mean, they just wouldn't. And she sat on hold for over four hours. Finally someone picked up the phone. You know, the customers in order in which they were received, blah, blah, blah. We all know customer service is at an all time low right now. And it definitely was showing on this phone call. But, you know, when she got off and started, we started having a more philosophical conversation. I was like, you know, you need to give yourself more credit. You just sat on the phone for like four and a half hours because you were demanding that you get paid and you weren't gonna just, you know, roll over and take it. Like a lot of these companies are like, well, you know, if we shave an hour here, we shave an hour there. You know, they won't really complain about it. Times, you know, 500,000 employees, blah, blah, blah. You know, those are big numbers and we're not going to get into that. But give yourself some credit for the things that you do every day. Don't assume that someone else's life is perfect. Don't assume that someone else is living the great life. You know, everyone has their own demons. And I just see that a lot of people are constantly comparing themselves to other People in the industry or other people in their lives. And that leaves you feeling unhappy. And we don't. I mean, do you want to be unhappy? I don't want to be unhappy for sure. And it just puts out that frequency of lack of. Okay. And coming from lack is a place where, in my opinion, you get a lot of lack. You know, the. I hope and I'm going to try. That leaves you hoping and trying, even if you have to change your dialogue about yourself, even if it's not true, change it. Create a new story about yourself, even create a new history about yourself. Who says you can't? Right? And start living like it's real. If there's some things in your past or in your future or in your present that you don't like, create a new story about yourself. You know, that you are a happy person. That you may not believe it yet, but I guarantee it will happen once you start talking to your cells inside, because your cells are listening. They are listening to you. And we carry, like, you know, a lot of us carry these steamer trunks of this is what happened to me. And this is why I am who I am. And this is why my future is going to be this way. Because this happened to me in my past. And then you have all the evidence that you've ever needed in your steamer trunk that you're, you know, that's chained to you, that you're lagging behind you. And unload that steamer trunk. Say goodbye to all those stories about why you are who you are. Yeah, there are some solid cases of very big misfortune. And it does suck. However, it doesn't need to color your future and your present. You know, look at Stephen Hawking. Whenever I get depressed about myself, I definitely look at Stephen Hawking and what an amazing person he was in the face of complete breakdown of his body. But his mind, you know, was just, God, so inspiring. And I look at all the people that inspire me every day and I have my. I have my days where things have gotten hard and, you know, there are a lot of people that I could compare myself to, but I don't. When I find myself doing it, I tell myself to stop. And when I was in Ireland once, I was trying to climb this mountain called Knock Naray and, oh, my God, I was looking straight in the face of. Of not being a skinny person, okay? And I was like, oh, my God, I gotta drag myself and my extra weight up that hill. I've gotta do it. I know I've gotta do it, but how am I Gonna do it. And we were with a guide, right? And his name was Michael. And Michael was looking at me like, is this girl gonna die on me? And I was just looking at the top of the hill. It was daunting. And I was like, well, it was mountain, but looking at the top of the mountain, and I was just like, oh, my God, how do I do it? He said, rita, just look down and focus on one step at a time. Like these sheep, they hardly ever look up, but they go up and down the mountain all day long, and just look down like a sheep, and don't look up until you get to the top. And that was one of the best pieces of advice I have ever had. Because I got up to that mountain, I stopped suffering. I did focus on one step at a time, and I got up there a lot quicker and with a lot less anguish. My face was beet red. Yes. But I sat down at the top. We were bringing a stone to Queen Maeve's grave. We're not gonna get into Queen Maeve, but we're bringing a stone up there to put on her, Karen. And that's like a grave. And it was so incredibly beautiful up there. And I was so proud of myself. And I was just elated by that piece of advice. And I have used that piece of advice for years and years and years. When I am battling something huge is just look down and take it one step at a time. And then my partner in business and in life gave me another piece of advice. She's a double libra. And if you know anything about astrology, libras are very. They're an air sign, and she's a double air sign. And fascinating is that she doesn't ever show a lot of signs of stress. And I asked her one day, you know, how can you remain so calm in the face of, like, something out in the future that could be worrisome or something that could happen or something that, you know, you think the shoe is gonna drop. And she said, I never worry about anything in the future until it happens or I get there, because what's the point? I'm gonna ruin the present. Oh, my God, I loved that. And again, that's another thing I do. I use that like. That piece of advice was awesome. And she practices that every day. She never really gets her, you know, her feathers ruffled until it happens. And that preserves so much of your present. And obviously, from day to day, putting your head down and not looking up and focusing on yourself and your journey in life and what you're going to do and how you're going to change the world if you choose to do that. But everything's on every you're on your own path, not someone else's path. We can use other people for inspiration, but at the end of the day, all we have is ourselves. This is a great lesson to learn because it keeps us present and focused on ourselves so we can be there for other people and we can be there for our pets. And we can be less stressed because our pets worry about us. When we're stressed, it's really hard for them to heal and relax in an environment that is chaotic. And leaving you with some Advice from the Buddha 483 B.C. okay, we are what we think, all that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world that is powerful thanks for listening to.
