8 Dec 2025 · 8 min
A single-episode podcast by Dr. Robert Rohm (July 31, 2024) that recounts lessons learned from Zig Ziglar to illustrate the difference between being "on" (performative, turned-on behavior) and being "up" (a chosen, genuine positive attitude). Through a breakfast anecdote and reflections, Rohm urges listeners to choose lasting, authentic positivity and personal growth rather than temporary, performative enthusiasm.

Hi, I'm Dr. Robert Rome and I want to share with you one of the, probably one of the most key, insightful things I ever learned from Zig Ziglar. When I worked with him years ago, Zig had a way of just having keen insight into circumstances and situations that the average person would have just missed. I remember being with Zig many, many times and situations would take place and later we would talk about it and I would think to myself, wow, I totally missed that. He was always looking for wisdom, for insight, and for key concepts that he could teach as well as apply to his own personal life and business. Ziggle is a very unique individual. He came from Yazoo City, Mississippi, grew up working in a grocery store, and was just very, very insightful when it came to studying people and observing them and how they were different. And he would often talk about his roots and how he said, I grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, but I got to Dallas, Texas as quickly as possible. And of course that's where he lived his life and had his business and family and just, just a great experience. That's where I got to know him personally and work with him for several years. Anyway, Zig had this capability of always studying situations. He didn't live his life like many of us do. Just que sera sera what will be will be the future's not ours to see Que sera sera we'll get up, go through the door.
Leaving the house in the morning, and then just go through daily activities and then, you know, see what happens. That wasn't his approach and I learned to observe that in him by hanging around him, watching him. He was, he was listening, he was looking. It's like he was watching and waiting for something to happen. It's almost like every day of his life he was looking for a brand new story or a brand new piece of wisdom or a brand new opportunity to learn and grow in personal growth and development. Most of you know these podcasts are called Becoming Wiser. And that's really how it started for me over 40 years ago is hanging around someone who wanted to be wiser, hanging around someone and observing. How do you get wiser? Well, you get wiser by paying attention. You become wiser as you start to connect the dots in life day by day. Life is the best teacher in the world. I would rather have the experience of life than all the theory in the world of someone else who had no experience. So recognize the fact that you're looking, you're observing, you're watching, you're waiting, you're looking for something to take place that you can learn from on a daily basis. Well, I want to share with you one of those situations and how it came about in Zig's life and then how he was able to share that with me. Have you ever been around, as I mentioned earlier, someone who just seemed to be. You couldn't quite put your finger on it, but you were just a little uneasy around them. They seem to be. I don't know what the right word would be, but not being unkind or not being, you know, mean or disingenuous or hateful to somebody, they just seemed a little fake. They just seemed to be a little off in the way they talked about other people and the way they operated their life, the way they did things. Zig was teaching one time in a seminar, and all evening he was speaking and talking about the power of positive thinking. And he said the next morning he was getting his breakfast. He was walking through the breakfast line with all the participants, the attendees at the event. He was getting his breakfast, his orange juice, his coffee, his eggs and toast and bacon. He said as he was walking through the line, a woman walked up to him and said, well, you don't seem very motivated to me. Zig said she kind of screamed at him a little bit, said he caught him off guard, and he jumped a little bit and turned around and he said, well. Well, what do you mean? She said, well, I was just watching you come in here and get your breakfast, and you don't seem to be very motivated. And Zig said, well, I'm sorry. I'm just getting my breakfast. And she kind of walked off. Zig, now this is an example of what I'm talking about. Most of us would have gone, well, that was weird, or something was wrong with her or, why'd she say that, not Zig. He was always trying to learn and grow, which is really the purpose of life while we're on this planet, to learn and grow day by day. As to what's going on, why'd she think that way? Why she feel that way? So Zig said, I thought about it a little bit later on that day. And he said, I figured it out. She did not understand the difference. Here it comes. This is the whole podcast. She did not understand the difference between being on and being up.
I'll say it again. She did not understand the difference between being on and being up. Those two words just have two letters on, O, N, and up. So let me explain a little bit how those two words are. Is different. As night and day, you see someone who is jumping around and trying to create a lot of energy and enthusiasm by hopping up and down and yelling and screaming, because motion creates emotion, and sometimes emotion creates motion. It works both ways. So Zig said, I thought about it. And he said, I realized she did not understand the difference between being on and. And being up. You see, a person who's on knows how to turn it on. They see the right people coming, and all of a sudden they get happy or they're in the right set of circumstances, and they know how to turn up the volume because they got to turn on the personality. It's like a used car salesman. They get a bad rap many times, but they turn on when you walk into the showroom, hey, how you doing? Good to see you today. Thanks so much for coming in. And you get a little bit uneasy. Like, are you like this all the time? Zig used to say, somebody who's on all the time is on something. It's dangerous to just all of a sudden go from 0 to 100 miles an hour in your life, in your conversation, or in the way you behave or act.
Then Zig used to talk about being up. Now listen carefully. This is so good. I'm so glad. This is wisdom at its best. A person who is up is up because they choose to be up. It's their attitude. It's their motivation. It's the desire in their heart to want to do better. And many times a person who is watching them will not really, truly understand what's going on. But the person who is up chooses to look for the good, the pure, and the positive. In every situation. They have a attitude of gratitude. Their mindset is, this is a great opportunity. I know I don't feel good. I'm tired, I got a headache. I got up too early, I worked too late, I don't have enough money. I and a thousand and one other excuses. But they don't go there. They simply decide, I'm Going to choose to be up. I'm going to look for the good, the pure and the positive in everything. Zig said all of that came about because of the lady who said to him, well, you don't seem to be very motivated to me. You don't seem to be very excited. This morning at breakfast, Zig said, I started thinking. She did not understand the fact that motivation is not something you can turn on and turn off, but it's something you choose to do. It's something you choose to be up about. It's something where you say to yourself, I could complain, I could whine, I could moan, I could groan. I could make things really be bad for me and everybody else. But I. Here's the word. Choose to not do that. I choose to be up. I choose to look for the good, the pure and the positive. I choose to talk up other people when things go wrong. I'm not going with them. I'm going to look for ways that in my heart, in my attitude, I can be up. Now, listen carefully. Being up can certainly be challenging because sometimes you've got to say something and sometimes you don't. Sometimes you have to go out of your way to help someone. Sometimes you have to go out of your way not to help someone so they can learn a lesson or stand on their own two feet. This is why it's called wisdom. You have to learn how to work with life in such a way that everybody wins. You don't always turn it on and just become a fake person to make everybody around you think well of you. But you learn how to temper yourself. You learn how to control yourself. You learn how to be up and not on. You know, when I think about this, I. I just can't emphasize enough how one little concept, one little concept about two little words, and both of them have two letters in them. On and up bars the difference in day and night. Mark Twain once said the difference between the right word and the almost right word was the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. Well, big difference. If I'm out walking in, a lightning bug hits me, I'm not going to worry too much. But if lightning hits me, well, that's a different story. And so, you know, if you were watching me, I'll use this as an example. If you were watching me and. And I saw you or I saw another person that I knew, I would smile and I would say, good to see you, or I would be happy. I would be up. Now you don't know. Here comes. Listen. You don't Know by just looking at my outward appearance at face value, well, am I turning it on or am I just being up? But here's. Here's the secret, actually, you would know.
Think about it for a minute. You know, when you're around someone who's genuine, you know, when you're around someone who's humble, you know, when you're around someone whose attitude is they're a learner, they're a seeker, they want to have a better life. They're looking for the good, the pure, and the positive. They're looking for personal growth and development. They're looking for ways to do life better. In a nutshell, they're looking for ways to learn and grow. Scott Peck was a psychiatrist, a medical doctor. He said, I spent all my life trying to understand the secret to life. He said, I personally counseled 40,000 people and have files on that many. As I was a medical doctor and a psychiatrist in the military. He said, I just wanted to know one thing. What is life all about? He said, the more I studied it, the more I finally figured it out. Life is about learning and growing. You see, that's what it means to be up. That's what it means to. I'm looking for ways that I can choose to have a good attitude. I'm looking for ways that I can say something nice to someone. I'm looking for ways that I can keep my mouth shut and not say something mean or hateful to someone. I'm looking for ways to be up. But you see, if you. And here's the crazy thing about this. If you know how to turn it on, you also know how to turn it off. I mean, I know you were thinking about that. You were one step ahead of me. Because anybody who can turn it on can also turn it off. And we've been around people like that. Hopefully, we've never been that way, but we all probably have from time to time. We turn it on when we need to and then we turn it off. And that is a very poor way to live, because now you're living by your emotions. You look at your environment, and hey, if I can turn things in my favor, if I can make a little extra money, if I can make an extra buck, if I can get somebody to like me, if I can get a promotion, then I'm going to turn it on. But then the unfortunate thing about that is, in time, you'll turn it off. You'll turn it off. When things don't go your way or someone says something unkind to you, or mean or hateful, and you'll just get a bad attitude, and all of a sudden people will meet the real you. Well, I don't want to be that person. So I learned years and years ago, don't turn it on. Don't be the kind of person knows how to. I'm going to turn it on today, man. No, I choose to be up. I'm going to look for the good, the pure and the positive. I'm going to try to have a good day. And if things go bad, well, welcome to life. That's just part of life, that things are not going to go your way all the time, but you can still be up. You can learn. Someone once said, there's a silver lining inside of everything if you just look for it. And that's what I really learned from Zig. I watched him do this. Not only did he know how to teach it, but he learned how to learn it. And that's what I hope and pray that as you listen to these podcasts, you won't go, well, that was nice. That was interesting. I learned a lot. But you'll start to apply them. You'll say, wait a minute now, how do you do that again? You look for ways in life to choose to be up. You're not going to turn it on tomorrow in order to impress someone, but you're going to have the inward attitude of, I want to have a better life. I want to learn and grow. I want to be positive. So much of this has to do with your attitude. It has very little to do with your environment. I don't know if I guess I can just share this with you. So much of my day is wrapped up in studying, in reading and doing things that are. The favorite thing I like to do is get up on a stage with fifty, eighty, hundred thousand people and speak for three or four hours. And I have done that, but that's very rare. Most of my days are reading, studying, listening, thinking. Not a whole lot of excitement to them, except for one thing. They really teach me how to get up. They're not exciting, they don't turn me on. And I'm not even looking for that. And I hope you'll understand that. Don't start looking for things that really excite you, that really turn you on, because people can read through that and they don't like a person who is full of pretense. They love people who are full of substance. I want to be a person of substance, not a person of pretense. Well, that's our podcast for this week. I hope you'll start thinking and looking for ways you can choose to be up. Other people will notice it and it will take you to places you probably never imagined. Remember, we're learning to become wiser on these podcasts, and I hope and pray today's podcast has helped you to become wiser. I'm Dr. Robert Rome. I look forward to talking to you soon. God bless you. Have a great day. Bye Bye.
