Dr. Robert Whitfield's multimodal pain protocol uses rest, nutrition, massage, and red-light therapy instead of IV narcotics alone. Most patients leave recovery within 30 to 40 minutes without vomiting and experience less sharp pain and nausea.

Now, if you don't do any of the things that I spoke about, a lot of patients wake up having really intense or sharp pain. That's from surgery. Then they'll get medicine through the iv. That's IV narcotic. And that's what leads to people getting nauseated and throwing up. So it's almost unheard of that any of my patients throw up at a surgery center. And they're all ready to go, usually within 30 to 40 minutes, because everything that we did up front makes the recovery room process easier. They just want you to be comfortable so you can get up and, you know, you know, leave on your own with your friend or family member, loved one, whomever's helping. But just like the patients we saw today from last week, most of them, they don't want to take pain medicine, and many of them don't really need much. And if they kind of just follow the principles that we've laid out in terms of getting enough rest and nutrition and lymphatic massage and hyperbaric therapy and red light, I mean, we have a pretty complex multimodal system to prevent the need of relying on a controlled substance for pain control.
