Dr. Robert Whitfield found bacterial contamination in 29% of scar tissue samples from breast implant removals. Bacteria form biofilms on implants and trigger oxidative stress that disrupts immune balance, potentially causing the symptoms patients call breast implant illness.
Chapters
we published the largest series in the world looking at scar tissue specimens after explant, and 29% have bacterial contamination. So that's a real thing. You can't dispute that. That's what it is. So what does that mean? That means throughout the course of life, we got bacteria in our blood, and if we had an implant, whether it's a hip, knee, breast, dental, cardiac, neurologic, whatever, that stuff can get stuck on there because our body can't take care of it because that's not our body. Yeah. And then that stuff can sit there on the breast implant in this case and signal back and forth to the breast tissue. Now specifically in the breast tissue, there's a fatty acid, oleic acid. It can get oxidized. Now we don't want too much oxidative stress because that's harder for our bodies. We want to live in a more reduced state. So this causes more oxidative stress, and it oxidizes the oleic acid that goes downstream in our immune system and ultimately causes activation and changes in macrophages. Long story short is that's responsible for symptoms when you measure it in a research environment in patients with breast implant illness.
