Fat Transfer vs Implants: Will You Lose Nipple Sensation? #shorts

In this short interview, an interviewer asks Dr. Robert Whitfield whether breast fat transfer can cause nipple or breast sensation loss, a problem often reported with breast implants. Dr. Whitfield explains that nipple sensation is supplied by superficial nerves, notably the so‑called “12th nerve,” which run in the epidermis and dermis around the nipple complex. When a breast implant is placed, especially a large one in a tight skin envelope, rapid expansion stretches and can injure these nerves, leading to loss of sensation. He notes that during explant surgery he frequently finds these nerves terminating into the implant capsule. By contrast, fat transfer does not involve rapid expansion or a foreign device, so it generally does not create the same sensation issues.
