Dr. Robert Whitfield describes a less-invasive tummy tuck done in an office under local anesthesia in under two hours, using tools like Morpheus8 and microneedling. It leaves no visible scar and requires minimal downtime, unlike traditional tummy tucks that need general anesthesia and produce a visible scar.

This is Dr. Robert Whitfield. I'm a board certified plastic surgeon. I own Aloes Skin and body by Dr. Whitfield in Austin, Texas, where we strive to achieve natural results through art, science and innovation. I'm very excited today to talk to you about a smart tummy tuck. But before we get to that, let's discuss who needs a traditional tummy tuck. Predominantly female, of course. Usually after more than one childbirth, there's excess skin and fat of the lower abdomen. And then this rectus diastasis, which is really the separation of the abdominal muscles which leads to a fuller appearance, especially of the lower abdomen, doesn't really respond to exercise, especially after more than one childbirth. Additionally, breast surgery can be done at the same time, which is referred to as a mommy makeover. And if that's not exactly what the client is looking for, then they don't want additional breast surgery. They don't have that much excess skin and fat. They don't really have a large diastasis. What can we offer them? They can't afford time away from work. They don't want to take away time from their activities, daily living, exercising, whatnot. They don't want general anesthesia, and they especially don't want a tummy tuck scar in the lower abdomen that's visible. Well, which tummy tuck option is right for me? Well, if you have a large amount of excess skin and fat and a large rectus diastasis or you desire breast surgery at the same time for rejuvenation after childbirth, breastfeeding, etc. Then the traditional tummy tuck makes more sense. But a smart tummy tuck really fits that client who wants a rejuvenation procedure doesn't really have a lot of excess skin fat, doesn't really have a duck diastasis that really needs repair. They don't require or want breast surgery, but it is a way to get rejuvenation without taking time away from work or activities of daily living. It doesn't require general anesthesia and there's no visible scar. So here's some very, very nice before and afters of a traditional tummy tuck. There's a lot of excess skin and fat. When she pushed out her abdomen, applied pressure, she really had a large rectus diastasis which she wanted repaired. So a traditional tummy tuck was right for her, but you can actually see the scar that's sneaking out of her photo there on the right lower abdomen. And so that was fine for her. That's what she wanted. She totally understood the risk of benefits and that was what fit her best. But for this client, she didn't have that much excess skin and fat. She didn't have a diastasis that needed repaired, she didn't desire additional procedures, she did not want to go under anesthesia, and she did not want a visible tummy tuck scar. So I did this smart tummy tuck using bodytight Morpheus 8 Fractura and pals under local anesthesia in the office in less than two hours. Here is her three week results. She's got some redness from the microneedling that's going to fade away over the next one to two weeks. But you can really see on profile how much I changed her lower abdomen. Once again, two hours under local anesthesia, she got up, left the office, went back to her normal activities of daily living. I released her to play tennis the following week. No issues. So let's compare traditional versus smart. Traditional requires general anesthesia. You can do tightening of the rectus diastasis, but there is going to be a visible scar. The smart tummy tuck is office based. Under local, there is no downtime, there is no visible scarring. We do not tighten the rectus diastasis in this instance.
