Dr. Robert Whitfield studied 694 capsules and found that 29% contained bacterial DNA missed by standard cultures. A negative culture doesn't mean no infection: bacteria can hide in biofilms and won't grow in the lab, so PCR testing catches what culture misses.

Myth, a negative culture doesn't mean your capsule is clean. Fact, a negative culture means the bacteria did not grow in the lab. It does not mean they were not there. In my PCR study of 694 capsules, 29% contained bacterial DNA that standard cultures completely would miss. These bacteria were living inside a biofilm, a structure that protects them from being detected by the very test most hospitals use to check for infection. So when a patient tells me her culture was negative, but she still doesn't feel right, that negative result does not close the case. It just means the wrong tool was used to look at it. PCR and culture answer different questions. Culture asks, can we grow this? PCR asks, is the DNA there?
