Dr. Robert Whitfield explains what PCR testing can do: detect bacterial DNA on implant capsules, identify the organisms, and show how common they are. What it cannot do: prove bacteria caused symptoms, tell if they're alive, or diagnose infection. In 694 capsules tested, 29% had bacterial DNA, but detection alone doesn't mean disease.

3 things PCR testing can tell us and 3 things it cannot. PCR can tell us that bacterial DNA is present on a capsule. It can identify which organisms, and it can tell us how common this is across a large sample. What PCR cannot do: it cannot prove those bacteria cause your symptoms. It cannot tell us whether the bacteria are alive or dead at the time of testing, and it cannot by itself diagnose an active infection. This distinction matters. I'm not saying PCR proves that implants cause illness. I'm saying it reveals something that standard testing systematically misses. In 694 capsules, 29% had bacterial DNA discovered. That is the data. What we do with it is a clinical conversation, not a lab result.
