Dr. Robert Whitfield describes removing a fused breast implant capsule from a patient who stayed symptomatic after explantation. The capsule had adhered to chest muscle and rib fascia. He sent it for analysis and found Cutibacterium acnes, a common bacterial biofilm.

Hey, it's Dr. Whitfield here in Austin. And so today we had a case. A patient previously had an explant but still remained symptomatic. No real changes in symptoms after the post op period. So I went back and this is fused and it's very thin, but their capsules fused to the back of the posterior surface of the pectoralis major and the anterior surface of pectoralis minor. And we took it off of the ribs and the fascia of the intercostal muscles. So it's here we send it off just to get some analysis done. For bacterial biofilm? Predominantly what I find. Kidobacterium, acnes especially. But the rest of this will send off to make sure there's nothing else that could be a problem. I have a low index of suspicion for anything else.
