Robert Whitfield MD discusses ruptured silicone breast implants and why patients sometimes go years without knowing. He sees patients with long-ruptured devices and stresses annual follow-up visits for anyone with implants, whether cosmetic or reconstructive.
I see a lot of people come in that just operated someone last week with 34 year old implants all ruptured and leaking and they knew about it on Mr. And I was like, okay. And the recommendation was what? And their doctor knew me. So they, they came, flew here and saw me. It's like, yeah.
And you're obviously talking about a silicone implant because a saline implant would just deflate.
Right, right. That's, that's always the case with this is like I don't understand the follow up because it's so anti, you know, how I would see and take care of people. So I didn't differentiate a breast cancer patient from a breast cosmetic patient because I can't have two protocols and follow up. That doesn't make any sense. So I would always see them in the same, you know, like annual follow up. Obviously anybody called with a problem, we'd see them and, and assess them and go from there. So basically I don't, I don't know how you get to this point if there's, there's follow up.
