Robert Whitfield MD explains breast implant illness as a chronic inflammatory disorder involving genetic vulnerabilities, toxic burden, and downstream effects like gut dysbiosis and hormonal imbalance. He argues the implant alone doesn't cause it, but rather interacts with genetic mutations that impair detoxification and environmental exposures.

Could you just describe to people out there what this is or what this, this situation is in health and how much it can affect the body?
Sure. So I look at breast implant illness as a chronic inflammatory disorder. So the device is just part of it, certainly. But it takes a number of things to happen. We've looked at genetics over a long period of time, and there's a very specific number of genetic problems. So SNPs, or mutations in your genetic code will limit your ability to just detox in general. So once you have that as part of the problem, and no one can pick their parents and no one can outrun a bad diet. So once you have that and too much toxic burden, either from your environment, your food, in this case a device, potentially, then it just becomes like a cascade. The gut microbiome will go off. You may develop more and more food sensitivities, hormonal balance will go off. You may have Hashimoto's, you may have suppression of your sex hormones, and then you can hear like, this becomes a very common thread in my patients, and they don't know what's going on.
