Robert Whitfield MD reports a published study (DNA testing begun Feb 2019) of over 600 consecutive scar-capsule specimens finding bacteria in about 29% of samples (range up to ~35%). The most common organism observed by his experience was Cutobacterium acnes, with Staphylococcus epidermidis as the second most common; Whitfield suggests bacterial interaction with breast tissue may explain patient symptoms.
