Robert Whitfield MD explains what happens after a saline breast implant rupture: typically the saline drains and — because it is sterile when placed — the body absorbs it without consequence. Drainage often occurs within about a week (depending on rupture location). He advises patients to coordinate with their surgeon if they want implant exchange and to act relatively quickly because the implant pocket can start collapsing.
