Short YouTube GCSE-level maths tutorial (presented by Paul of Third Space Learning) explaining the algebraic factorisation known as the difference of two squares. The video defines the pattern (two square terms subtracted), gives a clear procedural rule (take square roots, place them at ends of both brackets, use a + in one and a − in the other), and demonstrates the method on the example x^2 − 9 → (x+3)(x-3). Hi, this is Paul from Third Space Learning. Let's look at the difference of two squares. Remember, you can access tons of free resources, practice questions and information on our one to one tuition@thirdspacelearning.com the difference of two squares is a way of factorizing a quadratic expression when we have two squared terms that are subtracted from each other. So if we have two squared terms are subtracted from each other, we can factorize it by opening a double bracket. Square rooting the first term, I'm putting it at the start of both brackets. Square rooting the second term, I'm putting it at the end of both brackets and then putting a plus in one and a minus in the other bracket. So for example, let's factorise x squared. Take away 9 by using the difference of 2 squares method. Now we can do this. Because X squared is a square number and 9 is a squared number, they're being subtracted. So the square root of x squared is X. So that goes at the start of both brackets. The square root of nine is three, so that goes at the end of both brackets. And then we put a plus in one bracket and a minus in the other one and the order doesn't matter at all. And there we go. We have factorized our quadratic expression. Now over to you.
