Single-speaker English-language math lesson by Brooke demonstrating how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions using the written method. She explains the rule: multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the fractional numerator; use visuals and two concrete examples (2 1/2 → 5/2 apples; 4 3/8 → 35/8 pizza).

My name is Brooke and in this video we're going to be converting mixed numbers to improper fractions using the written method. So if you have a look at our example, we've got two and a half apples. We're converting it into an improper fraction. So when I was dividing my apples into two, I was left with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 halves. Now what I was actually doing is multiplying my whole amount by the denominator. So, so two times two gave me four halves. I then needed to add on my remaining fractional part, which was one half, and that gave me five halves. Let's have a look at another example. We have four and three eighths of a pizza and I've represented it here using these pictures. And we need to write this as an improper fraction. So again, I'm going to start off with my whole number and I'm going to multiply it by my denominator. So that's 8, 16, 24, 32. I've got 32, 8. And then I need to add that onto the remaining fractional part. So 32, 8, add 3, 8 equals 35, 8. And that's how you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction using the written method.
