A single presenter (Ben) guides children through place value concepts, explaining the three "families" (ones, thousands, millions), use of commas, and how to read/write large numbers up to 10 million. He uses worked examples (e.g., 147; 853,147; 32,853,147; 32,803,047) and describes strategies for handling zeros and identifying the value of digits in each column.

Hi, my name's Ben. And in this video we're going to be looking at how to read and write numbers up to 10 million. Now, before your children start on this, they will have had an understanding of place value in the smaller group down here. As you can see, we've separated our numbers here into three families, if you like, and that makes it really clear and simple to see. So in the ones family, we have the ones, the tens and the hundreds. In the thousands family, we have thousands, tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands. And in the millions, we have the millions and the tens of millions. The next one would of course, be the hundreds of millions. Now, if we're going to write numbers into these columns, it's really important that the children know the value of the digit which is in each column. Let's take a look. So here we have the number 147. The one is in the hundreds column. The four is in the tens column, and the seven is in the ones column 147. And that's how it's written there. If we were to make this number larger, we now have 853,147. And again, the eight is in the hundreds of thousands. So it's 800,000 five in the tens of thousands and three in the thousands. You've seen from when it's written, we now have a comma, and it's a really good tip as well, for the children to see that where we would break for the thousands or the millions, which are thousands of thousands, we have that comma where the line is as well. And that really helps them to break down the numbers, especially if we get zeros, as we will later. So now onto a larger number. We're now dealing with 32,853,147. And you can hear the distinct families that play there and the commas in the right place too, to really elicit the children's learning to make sure that they know what's going on. It'd be good if you could say to them, what is the value of the digit 5 there? Or what is the value of the digit 3 there? And if they can turn around and say that that 3 is worth 30 million or 3 lots of 10 millions, it shows that they really understand it. What we can do here to push it further is we can reduce the number or we can increase the number, and we've reduced it here. We've got rid of the five in the tens of thousands, and we've got rid of the one in the hundreds column. So now we've got, instead of 32,853,147, we get rid of the 53 50. So it now becomes 3,000 and it's no longer 147, it's just 47. And again, having the place value columns like this is really useful for children who may struggle when there are zeros. So now Our number reads 32,803,047. So place values like this really, really helps children to read and write numbers up to 10 million.
