A short YouTube instructional video by Brooke (uploaded by Rob Langman) teaching formal written (column) subtraction without exchanging. Uses a place-value chart and a bar model to solve 585 − 323 = 262 by subtracting ones, tens, and hundreds in order and emphasizing correct place-value language (e.g., “8 tens take away 2 tens”). Mentions a follow-up video on subtraction with exchanging.

Hi, my name's Brooke, and in this video we're going to be looking at formal subtraction with no exchanging. Now, this is sometimes called column subtraction. Amy has 585 stickers, but she gives 323 to her brother. And we're trying to find out how many stickers she has left. So I'm going to start by writing the amount of stickers she has to begin with, which is 585. And I've represented this here using the place value chart. I'm then going to take away the known amount from the bar model, which is 323. So I'm doing 585, take away 323. I'm going to start off by taking away my ones, five ones, take away three ones, which leaves me with two ones. I'm then going to take away the tension. So I've got 8 tens and I'm taking away 2 tens, which gives me 6 tens. Now, it's really important to say 8 tens take away 2 tens and not 8, take away 2. I've then got 500 and I need to take away 3 hundreds, which leaves me with 2 hundreds. Now I've got my answer, 262. I can return to the problem. So 585 stickers take away 323, leaves me with 262 stickers. In the next video, we'll be looking at formal subtraction with exchanging.
