Short YouTube transcript (Third Space Maths Hub) where two speakers discuss teaching times tables in primary school. They stress that times tables are foundational—especially for learning fractions—describe Year 4 resources (Times Tables 2, a Parent PowerPoint for parents, and an "Ultimate Times Tables" collection of age-appropriate games and activities), and note a move away from rote learning toward deeper understanding and parental support.
Times tables, always a challenge in school, but I suppose even more of a focus now that we've got the year four timetable. Check.
Yes, we. I always say we don't teach to the test. That's not why you become a teacher. That's not what you want to do. But actually times tables are a real foundational knowledge that is so important for pupils to have. If you think about fractions, understanding your times tables before you understand fractions is very important because they go hand in hand. So we do have a whole range of resources that you can go and have a look at to try and develop your pupils. Times Tables 2 that I just want to highlight is the multiplication tables. Check. Parent PowerPoint. This is just a very quick PowerPoint that you can share with your parents. It's got a load of information about the multiplication tables. Check. So you can be sure that they understand what it is and they can support their pupil best before those checks if that's what you want to do. And then the one that I, I think is an absolutely fantastic resource is the ultimate times tables. This is just a whole bunch of games that are age appropriate games and activities to help pupils not just learn their times tables by rote, but to actually understand their times tables and understand the links between different times tables.
Great. Thanks, Hannah. I definitely learned my times tables at school by rote, so it's great to see we're moving away from that.
