So by hiring a professional, I got done the thing that I wanted to get done. I got it done in a way that was proper and professional, that wasn't going to need doing again, that wasn't going to be fucked up by an amateur. And I reclaimed the time that I otherwise would have spent trying to figure it out and do it myself. You're listening to the Circle C Project. Move yourself from a life of lethargy to a life that's lit, and life will be good. Well, not always good, but that's a conversation for another day. Okay, let's get to it. Quick episode today. And this is particularly for anyone who is like I used to be, who just feels that when things are a bit difficult or you're in a bit of a bind, or there's just something that you need to work out, you just want to kind of do it yourself. You just think that it's quicker if I do it myself. I'm intelligent enough, I'm smart enough, I'm clever enough to just do it myself. And that's good to a certain point. And this is going to sound a little bit like a contradiction because particularly when I talk about confidence, I talk about trusting that you can figure things out along the way, but you also need to be aware of when you need help. So I've talked before about the importance of building a squad. And I've also mentioned that building a squad can be just people around you. It can be friends, it can be peers, but also it can be some professionals. In this episode, I'm going to talk about why you should hire a professional. Not always, but there are times when it's just better. It's just easier. It just gets you there a lot quicker if you hire a professional. But I'm going to tell you a little bit of a story to illustrate this. So, a few months ago, I think it was about the time I started this podcast, and I may have mentioned that we bought and moved into a new house. And it's a nice house, but there's a few things that they're going to need doing, including a major renovation, which is going to be occurring at some point, which I'm dreading a little bit, if I must say. But anyway, I digress. The garden. So in the garden, there was a tree that had been chopped down by the previous owner, but the stump was still there, and the roots. And we've got a fairly nice lawn, and I want to be able to play football with my kids. So I wanted this. This stump and these roots gone because they kind of bulged up in the middle of the lawn and they were in the way. And I remember talking to my dad, and he came over once, and he's starting to talk to me and explain to me how. How I can go about removing the stump, you know, what I would need to do, the tools that I would need, how long would take, and that kind of thing. And I just glazed over because I knew as soon as you started talking that there was no way I was going to remove this stump. And it wasn't that I couldn't. I mean, of course I could figure it out. You can find anything these days on YouTube. And obviously my dad's advice would also have helped with that. But partly I didn't want to. The time it was going to take me, you mean, was going to detract that time from other things which not either enjoy doing or which I'm more capable of doing. I mean, things which are, as the writer Gay Hendricks says in his book Big Leap, things which are in my zone of genius. And removing a stump out of. Out of my lawn is most definitely not in my zone of genius. I'm not. I'm not a big one for manual labor. I know that makes me sound very precious, but what can I say? I. I know myself and I know what I am, and that's okay. I'm okay with that. I've made peace with that. And I'm fortunate that I'm in a position where I can afford to pay somebody else to do things. People. People where these things are in their zone of genius. And so I knew instantly that I was actually going to Hire somebody to remove the stump for me. So that's what I did. And the beauty of that is that the person came around. I mean, they did. They did a whole garden, but they came under. They did the stump probably in a couple of. I mean, it's not completely gone, but they did what they needed to do and they put down what they needed to put down. And they've explained kind of like what will happen in the process and how long that will take, but it took them a couple of hours. And I paid them. You know, I paid them what they quoted, which was fine. And just looking at the situation, the time it took them and the amount that I paid them was far more beneficial to me than me going out there saving that money and spending that time myself. Because as I've said before, you can make more money, but you can't make more time. And that time was more valuable to me than the money that I paid them to do it. So by hiring a professional, I got done the thing that I wanted to get done. I got it done in a way that was proper and professional, that wasn't going to need doing again, that wasn't going to be fucked up by an amateur. And I reclaimed the time that I otherwise would have spent trying to figure it out and do it myself, not to mention the energy and the frustration that I would have gone through being out there in the garden trying to do that. So I'm telling you that because hiring professional occurs across the board, when you get somebody who knows what they're doing, who is in that zone of genius, getting them to help you or to do the thing for you is going to save you a whole lot of stress, a whole lot of anxiety, just. And a whole lot of time. And time is the one commodity, as I say, that we can never get enough of. So particularly if you're out there toiling away in a big law job, a stressful corporate career, time is something which you, I'm guessing you often just say you don't have enough time, you don't have enough of. You know, if you are at home, you're exhausted because the job is taking it out of you, and you don't always have the sort of the mental capacity to clear that space, to focus on things that you might need doing. And so actually hiring a professional can save you some of that anxiety and also help point you in the direction to the things that are important, the things that you probably do need to be focusing on, and to leave the things that don't. So I'M talking about this also in relation to coaching. So I remember when I was initially in those last five years of big law and spinning out and not knowing what I wanted to do and trying all of these different things, reading all of these different books, going down all of these YouTube rabbit holes and taking in all of this information, but not really following any particular path, any particular strategy. And whilst it was helpful, it also wasn't helpful because I was exhausting myself by not having a focus because I didn't really know which way to focus. All I knew is that I wanted to get out of the situation that I was in, but I had no idea how to do that. I had no idea really where to start. And by taking in lots of different things from lots of different people, I. And not following any of them through, not giving any of them time to sort of see if they worked, I wasn't really moving that much further forward. It was almost a case of, you know, one step forward, two steps back some of the time. I don't regret that time because it was. Definitely felt good to be doing something, but it wasn't necessarily taking me forward in the way that I wanted it to. Thing about working with a coach is that they can see you spinning out so much as if they're looking at you from above. And they can see you spinning around in this circle. And it's almost as if they're watching you in slow motion because they can pick out that particular thing that you say or look at the expression that comes on your face when you talk about a certain thing, and they can know which thread to pull. And then by pulling that thread, they can help you to see where it is that you should be going, where it is that actually you really want to be going. Because sometimes, often, you know where you want to be going, you know what you want to be doing, but you're too scared to say it. You don't think it's realistic, you feel silly, you feel that you'll be judged. And the great thing about being in a space with a coach is that coach doesn't care. The coach doesn't care about anything else outside of the situation. All your coach cares about is seeing you win, seeing you be, do and believe that you can do the thing that it is that you want to do. The. The life that you want to create. Having somebody who literally just wants to see you win is more powerful than you can probably imagine, because it isn't that the people outside of your life don't want you to win, but they all have a vested interest in how you do things. And that's why if you decide to do something new, if you decide to step off the corporate path, or if you decide to move from big law and to go to a smaller law firm, or you decide to move from your senior management job in your company to take a role at a startup, people are going to have questions about that because you're going to make, probably make less money. They're going to be concerned about the drop in status, they're going to be concerned about all of these things. But in relation to that and when you're sat in a room with a professional, they only care about what's in your best interest. I mean they have no vested interest or they, as I said, all they want to do is see you in and when I realized that, I think, I think working my first coach was probably the first time that the penny dropped for me in that score. And then since then I've been very, I guess, gung ho in hiring professionals as and when I need them. So full disclosure, I obviously worked with my first coach for around a year. I worked with a speaking coach in a speaking program for a short period of time as well. I have a business coach. I worked with a another life coach a little bit later because then I find is that as you, as you kind of step up a level, other issues come up and coaching can still help with that. So I still saw a coach then. What else have I worked with? I worked with a hypnotherapist earlier this year which was extremely valuable to me and again to sort of initially to sort of work on subconscious money blocks but actually it brought up a whole load of other stuff as well. And that is something which I will go back to, I will go back to hypnotherapy at some point. Don't have an actual therapist yet, but that's really just because I haven't found the right one. But I will do and, and I'm currently working with a speaking coach with a TEDx coach to, to put together a TED Talk as well and think about all of these things. All of the things maybe with the exception of hypnotherapy, but all of the other things that they have helped me with are things which I could have done myself but it would have taken me a hell of a lot longer to get to where it was that I wanted to get to. I mean taking for example my current TED coach, I could sit down, come up with an idea and put together a TED Talk and go through the process, but working with somebody who has actually already given a talk, who knows what the application process is, who knows the sorts of things that make a good talk, the things that you need to hit on how it should be structured. I could go and Google all of this, but it would take so much of my time and my energy and it's not in my zone of genius, but it is within that zone of genius. So then that allows me to just then focus, take the information that I get from the session and focus on crafting the best speech possible or focus on getting the thoughts from my brain down onto paper and then working with that coach to craft the best speech possible. So sometimes we look to save money by trying to do everything ourselves. But that can be, and I know I found this in my experience, it can be a false economy because all it means is that you spend a lot of time trying to do a lot of things and not really knowing which way to go. And actually hiring a professional can shortcut that process and help you to go faster. So I hope that's given you some food for thought. As I say, I don't want you to think, oh, you told me, Mr. Ryan Spence, life coach, that I needed to trust that I could figure this out and now you're telling me to go and hire people. That's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that you will know, you will be by doing this work, the work that I talk about, you will gain the self awareness as to when you need to work and figure things out for yourself. And when is the right time to hire somebody to help. There are still things I do within my business myself that I should probably hire someone to do. And at some point I will. But I like to the things which I like to know how to do so that when I do get to the stage where I think about hiring somebody, I can actually explain to them what I want to do and how, how I want it done. And I can understand how they should be doing it. But it doesn't mean that I can't do it. It just means that, okay, at that point it's good to hand that off so I can spend more of my time and energy focusing on the things that are in my zone of genius. So hire a professional. You'll know when is the right time to do that. And if you're sat there and you're in the position that I was and you're thinking, I know where I am is isn't where I want to be. And I've been reading all of the books, I've been watching all of the YouTube videos, I've been doing all the searches on Google. I've got all of this information, but now I'm just overwhelmed and I really don't know where to start. And I'm less clear than I was when I first started. Stop, take a breath and lay it out. And then think about, okay, what is it that you think you need at this point? What would be helpful to you right now and if it be helpful for you to just brainstorm some of that, just get some of that out of your head and just have somebody ask you the questions to, to get that information out, maybe questions you haven't been asked before and you haven't thought about before, then why don't you give me a call? Why don't we have a chat? This is exactly what I help clients with. And that's because, as I say, I've been there before. I know exactly how this is and I know how helpful it was for me to have somebody who was in my corner and who only wanted to see me win. So you can get on a consultation, call, head to iamrynespence.com, hit the button for coaching. You can find out a bit more about what coaching with me looks like and then book a call and we'll sit down for an hour and we'll chat and we'll figure out where we are and see are we a good fit to work together? I mean, do you like me? Do I like you? Can I help you with, with what it is that you need in that particular moment? One to one, coaching is valuable. I mean, the power of it to me is just immense. And that's why I will always, always talk about it. Whether you hire me as a coach or work with somebody else, I really believe in the power of coaching. And in order for you to win, I feel it's a really, it's a really good way of doing. It's really good way of saving your time, saving your energy and just moving forward. I mean, if you start now, just in six months, in a year's time, just imagine how much further you could be. I know, I look back at where I was even just a year ago, and the amount that I've done and that I've achieved, I not sure I would have done that without a coach. I probably would have worked just as hard, if not harder, but I would effectively have been spinning around in circles, not knowing where to focus and where to turn. So I am Ryan Spence.com hit the button for coaching and book a consultation.
