A business owner generating $1.5 million in revenue admits he's stuck doing client work himself because of ego. Speakers propose a 15-minute time-study exercise to track which tasks drive revenue, then delegate the rest. The real shift: move from being the star player to acting as coach from the sidelines, or the business won't scale past $1-2 million.
I own a company called— we're at $1.5 mil to date. Amazing. $700,000 net.
Badass.
My big concern is we have some very high-end clients. I have to be involved, I believe, in every single—
strong words. Yeah, thank you.
He nailed every single aspect.
Have to or choose to?
Choose to. Okay. Choose to, 100%. Yeah, yeah. It's hard to let that go, that ego.
So this is what you'd have to do. We do a time study, which is step one. So So take an Excel sheet, you can open up on your phone, every 15 minutes you have an alarm. It'll annoy everyone, don't worry about it.
I wouldn't do an alarm, that would be annoying.
And every time it goes off, you just write what you did in the last 15 minutes. At the end of the week, you can look at all those activities and rank them in terms of revenue. And then when you look at the bottom half of that list, does it neatly fit into some person that either exists currently that has bandwidth or somebody that we can hire? There's for sure things that are higher leverage, higher value.
Good tactics, I would go back and watch it again. The time study things, the kind of top grading of your task, all good stuff. This is really though more of a mindset issue. If you want to scale, you have to first be okay with making the shift from winning on the field as the MVP to winning from the sidelines as the coach to winning in the owner's box. Because if your company relies on you to be the most valuable player all the time, your company will never scale beyond you. It's simple as that. This is why most companies stall at around $1 million, $2 million with crappy margins. And the business owners are burnt out. They're just trying to hold things together. So, yeah, do the time study. Yep, figure out what you can hand off. But first, you have to choose to believe the truth that the more valuable you are to your business, the less valuable your business is. Start from there. Start with belief. Start with mindset. Tactics are gonna follow.
