Ryan Deiss cuts through hiring book hype for bootstrapped founders. Skip Topgrading (too long), Work Rules (Google's advice doesn't scale down), and Delivering Happiness (perks you can't afford). Read Who, The Ideal Team Player, and Scaling People instead.
Chapters
To hire a great team, you don't need to read Topgrading. It's 700 pages of HR processes you're never gonna actually run. You do need to read Who. It's everything in Topgrading minus about 400 pages. You don't need to read Work Rules. It's hiring advice from a company with 3 million applicants and unlimited money. You're not Google. You do need to read The Ideal Team Player. Hungry, humble, smart— 3 words that are gonna save you from every charming resume that ever burned you. You don't need to read Delivering Happiness. It taught everyone that culture and perks and vibes and that you should pay people $2,000 to drop out of the hiring process. It might work for established and funded companies. It is terrible advice for bootstrappers. You do need to read Scaling People. It's maybe the most complete book on building and leading teams I've ever read.
