How to improve your cashflow, afford your business and provide for your family

Trevor, owner of Valley Vital Medicine in Fargo, North Dakota, talks with Sachin Patel about scaling his functional medicine practice. He packaged services to improve cash flow, hired a team, and launched Vital Reset, a program where patients stopped metformin in 5 days and lost 16 pounds in one week.

All right, so speaking of promoting your practice, we have our next guest who is going to be sharing with us how promoting his practice and how promoting his services has really created transformation for him, his patients, his, of course, his practice, and then personally for himself and his family. So I'd love to welcome to the stage Trevor. Trevor, thanks for joining me today.
Thank you so much for having me. It's been an absolute pleasure to be working with you for the last couple of years.
Well, thank you. I appreciate that. And I always like to receive the compliment, but I also like to defer your love and gratitude to our entire team because it does take a team and it takes a community, which is so important. And you're part of that community. So I want to honor you for being such a asset to us as a member and for being somebody who's willing to share, because I love the path that you've gone down and I love what it's been able to do for you and your family and of course, your most importantly in this case, because our business only exists for our clients. Right. And it's a vehicle for us to live a better quality of life and to make an impact. But it doesn't exist until we get clients better. And that's something that you've been able to do, we've been able to simplify your practice and that's been transformational for you. So before we get too into that, I'd love for you to share a little bit more about, you know, where you were before joining the mentorship, maybe mentally where you were from a practice standpoint, where you were and how you were doing business and how that has transformed to present day practice that you have now.
Yeah, thanks so much. So my practice is Valley Vital Medicine. I'm here in Fargo, North Dakota. I'm a family nurse practitioner. And really my. I had an amazing opportunity to start my own functional medicine practice here. It was kind of a heart, gut wrenching journey in the fact, thinking about leaving a guaranteed salary from my previous, from my previous employer. And, you know, so I had my wife's blessing. And so as we went forward and started moving through, like, okay, how do I start this? And so Valley Vital Medicine knowledge is three years old. And so three years ago I was just getting the ball rolling. Started out super small, started out with just a few clients, and I got about six months down the road and I started realizing like, okay, paying my bills, which is great. I'm enjoying what I'm doing, seeing good patient outcomes, but at the same time, I Wasn't paying myself. I wasn't bringing anything home. And that's where one of your stories, Sachin, really resonated with me and really brought me to a point where, like, okay, how do I make this into something that is really not just good for my clients, but also helps me to be able to provide for my family, which was really, really huge and crucial? And so got to be spring just a little over two years ago, listen to your perfect practice, and learned a ton about how you were teaching people to develop their practices, make them more efficient, and so really resonated with me. And that's when I jumped in, became a member. And I remember during one of our first calls, you really talked to me a lot about packaging and how do we make this so that it's the best value for our clients, but also helps a lot with cash flow. And that was something that I was really missing in my practice. And so once we had that conversation and started implementing implementing that, that changed everything for me. It was only a few months later I started being able to pay myself, and now I'm at a place where I'm taking home more than I was at my previous employer. So it's pretty awesome.
That's awesome. That is awesome. So it's always great to be able to pay ourselves. It's always great to be able to pay it forward as well. And I want to come back to something that you said which is kind of getting your wife's blessing. I love that you use the word blessing instead of permission, because sometimes people use their spouse's limitations or the limitations of others around them to stop them from really pursuing their dream. And they always say a happy wife, happy life. And I would say a happy wife, happy business, and happy pursuit of business. And then a happy wife and a happy spouse, whatever the case may be, is, in my opinion, a huge unfair advantage for people when you have somebody at home that is supporting your vision that is in alignment with your vision that's so important and so extremely valuable in addition to having a community. Right. So as. As part of our theme, you know, one of the things that we've been teaching is that you need three things. You need a roadmap, you need a guide, and you need a community. And, you know, we need definitely a roadmap, which is what we're providing people over the course of this weekend and throughout our mentorship and our training programs, need a guide. And a guide is, you know, our internal guide. We have an inner guide, and we need somebody on the outside or several people on the outside showing us how it's done. And that's why I love being able to coach people like yourself and also to have a community of coaches and mentors that are here to help and support one another. And then collectively as a community, there's so much power in that. So that's awesome. Tell us a little bit more. So you started paying yourself, which is one of the first milestones, right? So there's a milestone ribbon cutting when we open our business. But really we should be celebrating the milestone of being able to pay ourselves because now it's a viable business. So tell us after that. Like what? Obviously your confidence goes up, your certainty starts to increase, cash flow starts to increase. What was the next phase of growth for you after that?
Well, being able to cash flow things and being able to afford the same practice, being able to provide for my family provides this great base now where I can go out and I can pour into other people and I can help develop a practice that really is going to be ultimately beneficial to others. And so, you know, working through the mentorship and some of the things that your team offers, we were really able to expand our, our offerings. And so we do, we do a lot of different things here at Valley Vital Medicine. We do some IV therapies, we do full functional medicine consultations. And we, our team. So just for an example, our team has grown from literally just a little over a year ago. I was doing everything still myself. I was doing all the billing, all the phone calls, all the emails. And it was to a point where like, okay, it's getting a little bit hard to keep up with it. But about a year ago, brought on my first nurse. She's about full time and also a front desk person. And man, that's been life changing, right. And takes a lot of that stuff off my plate. So our team's getting bigger and since then I have a couple other nurses that are part time as well. So our team is expanding, we're impacting more people, which is great. But one of the things that I love about what I've learned through perfect practice is that the alternative and some of the revenue streams that can happen from outside of your office, right? So you get time constraint by sitting down one on one with a patient. Like, it's great and it's great work and it does great things, but at the same time, there's only so much you can do. And so one of the, one of the things that I've done is I've put together using a resource called Vital Reset. And that Vital Reset, we've been doing it now for about the last nine, 10 months with clients and it's been life changing for so many of us clients and has allowed me to help people in a way that I have never otherwise been able to help them. This is something that, you know, it's, it's kind of, it's not just one to one, it's one to infinity. Right. As many people that can partake in this program can, of course, making sure it's an appropriate program for them. But beyond that, it really puts some of that pressure back onto the client to take responsibility for themselves and really lean into the journey and say, hey, you know what? This is important for me. It's important for me to take these steps for myself. It's not just like conventional medicine where you show up and you ask for a pill and you go home. There's more work to be done every day. And so just for example, just in the last couple months and one of my clients who was type 2 diabetic on 2000 milligrams of metformin and blood sugars were 150s fasting, which obviously is not great place to be. And we, we took her, she started with this Vital Reset program and literally within five days she was off her metformin and her blood sugars were in the 80s fasting.
Wow.
This stuff doesn't happen anywhere else. Right. In the first week she lost 16 pounds. This was huge for her and allows her then to say, wow, this is real. She's got type 2 diabetes, she's got PCOS, she's been in the conventional medicine system for a long time, has tried to lose weight, doing multiple different things, nothing has worked. But through these processes and some of what you guys teach, because I wouldn't have this program if it wasn't for you guys, at least not on the same quality. And so what this allows us to do then is take not just her, but there's 10 other people going through this program with her at the same time. And many of those other people have lost 20 to 30 pounds in the last five weeks. They feel amazing. And that's what this is all about. And not only do they feel amazing, now they have the resources to go on and take care of themselves because they have the power process and they have the knowledge to go forward and take care of themselves and make good healthy decisions and they're not guessing anymore.
Yeah, and, and I guess just for everyone's benefit, the, the, the reset program that you're referring to is, is kind of a turnkey solution that we've created for practitioners. And what we're teaching throughout this weekend is the framework to implement that. And this is a program that can be delivered one on one. It's a program that can be delivered as a one to many and eventually for some of our practitioners, it's a program that can be delivered as a one to infinity solution where there's a do it yourself component. So how long would you estimate, Trevor, it would take somebody who's starting from scratch to develop a program like this if they didn't have kind of the turnkey solution?
I can't even imagine to start that because I mean the depth of knowledge that you'd have to have in so many different systems, not to mention trying to build it out in Kartra or whatever platform you're going to use, I mean, it would take me months of probably full time work to try to figure out how to put all these materials together. And not only that, all the teaching materials are already there for us. And so literally I've taken a lot of the material that's been provided and I just kind of rebranded it and tweaked a few things so that I made sure it fit my practice and, and that it fit, you know, Valley vital medicine's personality, if you will. But beyond that, it very much has been just get it out there and get rolling with it and really you have pretty much everything you need to get going and change people's lives almost instantaneously.
I've been asking a question of a lot of our speakers and that is if you could go back five years, what would you tell the five year younger version of yourself as what practice advice would you give yourself?
You know, God's blessings are amazing and my five year old self. If I was going to look at myself now, I think I'd have to say, you know what? Trust the path that you've been given and don't let fear run your life. Because if you let fear run your life and you're unsure about where you're supposed to go next, that's a dangerous place to be. And you know, God's good and he always puts us in the right direction. He puts us in the right path and he puts us in touch with the right people. And so that's where I really appreciate, you know, yourself satching. But as you mentioned, your team, you know, people like Miranda and Natalie, they've been instrumental in where I'm at, you know, and just getting Their direct personal feedback not only is a lot of fun, but to watch the changes happen because the recommendations are really just, hey, here's that next step. And here's the thing that's really going to make a big difference for you in your practice going forward.
Awesome. I love that. So what would you say, just in closing here, what would you say are the attributes that somebody would. Desirable attributes that somebody would have to be successful with implementing something like this?
Attributes that would be important. You really have to, I would say, be dedicated, right? Be dedicated to going through, to kind of that finished product. Right. To have the time to get started and not finish getting this ready is not going to be instrumental to you beyond that. I mean, you got to have a loving heart, right? If you're not, if you're doing this for yourself, you're doing the wrong thing. If you're doing it for other people because you want to see their lives changed and you want to see people who are hurting, who have no other options. And they've tried what they call every other diet in the book, but they haven't done this. They haven't worked with you yet, and they haven't seen the changes that they can see literally in two weeks, a.
Week.
Getting, getting out there and telling people and showing people what it is that you can offer them is an amazing place to be. And also, you know, being resourceful, I would say maybe is the other thing. You know, using your contacts, you. And if you don't have the people that can help you take your practice and take your life to that next level, I think that that is of utmost importance to be able to surround yourself with those people. Because if you, if you don't have that, then you're going to have a tendency to be lost because you, you don't have anybody, as you said earlier, guiding you. If you don't have a guide, you're just going to kind of be floundering and trying to figure it out. One of the things that I've always said is, you know what? I have no desire to spend 10 years trying to learn something that somebody else already knows. And they can teach me in a month. That time I will never get back. And if I can fast forward my results and fast forward my practice to that level, that is priceless.
Yeah, it truly is valuable, right, to have the ability to fast forward time or collapse timelines. And I feel like having the right community, the right guidance, the right opportunity is a time machine. It really is. And it can fast forward you, you know, when you know what you want. You're coachable, you have an open heart, you have faith. Right? Then a lot of things, a lot of doors open up for us. So thank you, Trevor, for sharing your knowledge and your journey and your story. And we're still. There's so many chapters left in this book that you're writing, right, to create greatness, you know, a legacy for yourself, for your family, for your community and. And your practice is a vehicle to make that happen. So I appreciate you taking time out of your day and sharing and inspiring, showing us what's possible. And I know there's been so many things that have happened, so many wins, you know, financial wins, clinical wins, practice wins, growth opportunity. And it all comes from, you know, having the attributes that we just talked about and being somebody who's willing to take action and see things through into fruition. So, again, thank you so much. And, you know, if you have any last words you'd like to share with our community members before we jump off here, the floor is yours.
Well, thanks so much for the opportunity to share. This is exciting for me. I can't say that I've spoken in front of a crowd this big as of yet, so this is kind of a fun thing for me. But beyond that, I just am deep, deeply grateful for what's been provided to me through just a friendship and the mentorship and just the people in this community. Right. It's a community full of love. And I wouldn't be where I am today without the people that are here. They literally, they. They pour into you. They give you the best recommendation that they can. We're not in this for ourselves. You know, we're in this to make other people's lives better. And when we do that, guess what? It comes back to us in blessings that we could never imagine otherwise. So one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I am just very appreciative to be here.
Thank you, my friend. Have an amazing, amazing rest of your day.
Thank you. You too.
