Sachin Patel uses a water-and-pebble analogy to explain equanimity: drop a pebble in water and it causes no ripples. He argues that cultivating this quality prevents small external events like a patient's email from derailing your week, and is essential for the emotional resilience needed to succeed in life and business.

Equanimity. Equanimity is where if you think about water you drop even the tiniest pebble and the water gets rippled. So we almost want to be water that when you drop a pebble and nothing ripples, the pebble just drops in and then there's no transfer of energy that takes place as close as we can get to that. I think the better off we are in not just at our practices but in life, right? Sometimes you'll have a situation that a patient sends you an email and it derails your whole week, right? And it's because we were so we didn't do the work on ourselves to stay equanimitous in that situation, right? We attached way too much emotion to something that probably had nothing to do with us in the first place. So to be successful that it's going to require us to have that resilience, right? And have that emotional resilience along with the physical and spiritual resilience that it's going to take to build our business.
