Make diabetes a thing of the past with Sachin Patel

Sachin Patel (YouTube video) argues that metabolic syndrome and diabetes are primarily driven by insulin dysregulation rather than blood glucose alone, and that many people are "metabolically unfit." He recommends using short-feedback tools — specifically the Abbott Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitor — to gain self-awareness about how meals, stress, activity, and timing affect blood glucose and insulin demand. Patel reports the sensor samples every 15 minutes for two weeks, costs about $97 (Canada, over-the-counter), and enables rapid behavior changes; he shares client and personal anecdotes of improved glucose control and reduced medication use. The talk emphasizes balancing insulin and cortisol as foundational to hormonal and immune health and promotes precision/functional wellness and skill-building over reliance on medications.

What's up, family? Hope you're awesome. It's Achin here. Happy, amazing day to you today. I want to talk about diabetes and blood sugar dysregulation and metabolic syndrome, which is basically creating a cataclysmic state of affairs in North America and most developed countries, because this is what's actually causing most of the hospitalizations, is the metabolically unwell, metabolically unfit. And the problem with that is that not only does it increase the hospitalization risk for what's going on right now in the world, but until we change that, we will be susceptible as a population to many other threats. So we have a huge percentage of the population. The numbers keep changing, but it's an unacceptably large number of people that are metabolically unfit. And what that means is their metabolism is not good, which means that everything that depends on metabolism is not going to function optimally. Their brain is not going to function optimally. Their hormones and glands are not going to function optimally. The immune system, which is very metabolically intensive in terms of its energy requirements, is not going to work properly. So if we have metabolic issues, we have issues in every cell, tissue, organ system in our entire body. Now, you might be wondering, Satchin, what's a easy way to measure our metabolic health? And what's a way that we can see if what we're doing is actually working and making a difference? So I want to start by talking about diabetes, because diabetes, as we all know, is a blood sugar dysregulation, primarily not a blood sugar problem, but an insulin problem. And that's the mistake that most people make is they think of diabetes being a blood sugar problem. And that's what all the focus is on. Oh, I'm watching my blood sugars. I'm watching this. I'm not eating sugar. Well, those are the people that stay on diabetes medications forever because they're focused on the wrong thing. What you really need to focus on is insulin. Insulin is the main culprit in what causes diabetic tendencies or metabolic dysregulation. So when our blood sugar stays elevated for a variety of different reasons, which I'll get to in just a minute, then that causes stress on the pancreas to make insulin. And when we're under stress, our sensitivity to insulin decreases, so our tissues don't respond the way they normally would, and we have to make more insulin. And when you make more insulin, you accelerate the aging process. You increase cell division, which leads to cancer. You suppress the immune system. You increase blood pressure. You Increase cholesterol, you decrease libido, you change somebody's mood. All of those things happen as a byproduct of increased insulin. So, so then the question should be, how do I get my insulin in check? How do I reduce my unnecessary production of insulin? Because insulin is toxic to the body. So instead of shooting yourself up with it, which some people do because their pancreas can't make anymore, how about we figure out how to uncoil insulin resistance? So insulin resistance is something that primarily we associate with a sedentary lifestyle. It could be certain nutrient deficiencies. Sometimes you can't make enough insulin because you don't have enough zinc. And zinc is a rate limiting nutrient for insulin production. So how about that? We have zinc that has over 200 known metabolic functions in the body, including helping us make insulin. And so when we can't make enough, then our blood sugar stays high and this creates metabolic chaos in our body. So I want to talk about insulin for a few minutes and I want to talk about blood sugar and I want to talk about self awareness. So when we work with clients, we never, quote, unquote, treat their problems right. Just like I wouldn't treat somebody for misbehaving, I would change the behavior right, instead of treating it. Or we don't cure problems because to cure means to harden and to solidify. So I'm not trying to solidify your behaviors and treat them and allow you to continue creating those behaviors. What I'm more interested in is changing or altering, upgrading your behaviors and with useful information. So a typical person, when they see their family doctor, they get their blood Sugar checked every six months, let's say, or every 120 days. So you might get tested on January, tested again. And the problem with that is that when you get tested, there is no information in between. So you don't know what meals cause your blood sugar to go up. You don't know which meals caused it to stay stable. You have no information, you're flying blind. And so is your doctor. And you're not looking at all the right data. So what we like to do in precision wellness and in functional medicine is we like to shorten the feedback loop. So if it took you 120 days to know if you're doing it right or not making the right changes, that's not very effective. It would take you many lifetimes to really figure out what's going on. So in Canada, you can actually get one of these, which is a Freestyle Libre. And I recommend the Freestyle Libre too, because it Pairs with your phone. And what this device will do, you just very painlessly, literally painlessly put it in the back of your tricep, keep it there for two weeks. And what happens is every 15 minutes, it's collecting your blood glucose levels. And so now you know how different meals are affecting you, how different levels of activity are affecting you, how sitting in the sun is affecting you, how going for a walk is affecting you, how checking your email is affecting you. The main hormone to raise blood sugar is cortisol. So you'll be shocked at how many people's blood sugar levels go up because of stress and not food. And they're trying to tackle food as their problem when it may not be. Certainly food can be. So my wife and I wore. We always do these cool things. So we wore blood sugar monitors. We don't have diabetes. Not for diabetics. It's for anyone who wants to be metabolically optimized. And so we would eat the exact same meals at the exact same time. And we would then measure. The device would be measuring our blood sugar. And what I realized is that some of the foods that I love to eat and that I thought were healthy are still healthy from a nutrient density profile, were actually causing my blood sugar to go up unexpectedly. So an example would be a bowl of chickpea salad. So I had a chickpea salad and my blood sugar spiked. And of course it came back down, because I'm metabolically capable of bringing it back down in a timely manner. But the area under the curve represents the stressors on my body. That's how much insulin I had to produce in order to bring that blood sugar down. Now, my wife's, on the other hand, went up slowly, and it came down nice and slowly. So her response to the exact same meal was radically different. So what I suggest is you grab one of these, they're 97 bucks. It lasts you two weeks. Best 97 bucks you'll ever spend on your health. And you track each and every single meal very easily. You don't have to prick yourself. It doesn't even hurt when you put it in. And now you can track all your favorite meals, all your favorite favorite activities, all your favorite behaviors, and see how it affects you and the impact that it has on your health. When your blood sugar is balanced, then we balance two critical hormones. We balance insulin, and we balance cortisol. And if you can balance insulin and cortisol, then all the other hormones will automatically balance themselves. But if insulin and cortisol are out of balance, then none of the hormones can can balance themselves out. So that's why stable blood sugar is one of the key foundational pillars for functional wellness in a functional wellness and precision wellness model. We want short feedback loops. We don't want you finding out every 120 days, every six months, every year if what you're doing is working. We want you to know today if what you're doing is working. So then you can reinforce the behavior or change it. I want to share a quick story. My friend Lisa actually from Genius Network, I won't say her last name. She came up to me at a Genius Network meeting and she said, you've got to help my dad, Satchin, what can you do to help him? And I said, well, is he willing to help himself? And she said, well you know what? Not really. I've tried to help him. He's not listening, he's not making the changes. And I said, well, why don't you get him one of these bad boys, I'll ship it out to you. I won't ship it out to you if you're watching this. Sorry. But I shipped it out to her and she saw me at the next event and, and she's like, I can't thank you enough. Within five days my dad had his blood sugar balance and is off of his diabetes medications. He didn't need them anymore because he became self aware. He realized how each meal and the timing of the meal and each behavior was impacting him. And he was able to make an educated and informed decision. Sometimes your doctors think that people are lazy, right? I don't believe people are lazy. I believe they're misinformed, they're uninformed, they are unaware. And now technology has created beautiful advancements like a continuous glucose monitor at $97. Okay, at only $97 Canadian. So that's like $25 U.S. just kidding. Check the exchange rate. But this is such a powerful tool that can help you gamify the process, help you become self aware, help you become self realized and then make, make changes that. How else would you get this information, right? You can't have your doctor checking your blood sugar, drawing your blood every 15 minutes. But you can look at trends and you can see what you need to do. Each person is different. So as a, as a special experiment for yourself, have your spouse wear one as well and eat the same meals and watch what happens. Watch how your bio individuality comes into play. So genetically speaking, I already knew this. I make a lot of amylase, which means I digest my carbohydrates faster than the average person does. My wife, on the other hand, metabolizes carbohydrates a little bit slower because she doesn't make as much of the enzyme as I do. So I have to be careful because even carbs that are generally slow metabolizing carbs for most people are going to be quickly metabolized by me. And so I need to be conscientious of that. And so knowing this about me and knowing this about the clients that we work with, they become self aware. And there's nothing more powerful to your own healing journey than when you become self realized and self aware. Because now you're in charge, you realize very quickly who's in charge of your health. It's you. And it's not uncommon for us to have clients come off all their diabetes medication within the first five days and certainly insulin within two weeks under their doctor's supervision. But once we eliminate the need for a medication, then nobody can make us take it. There's no justification for it. However, many people think that there's no cure, that there's no solution, and there's no here's what there isn't. There isn't a cure for diabetes. There's treatments for it. And those treats just make you a happy customer. That always pays on time. But if you want to optimize your metabolism and biochemistry, then having that information is truly priceless to your health and can help you make better and more educated and informed decisions. In Canada, this is available over the counter. You don't need a doctor's prescription. I'll share a link where you can get it. Just type in Abbott Freestyle Libre and you'll be able to find it. And pick up the sensor. It's $97. I have no affiliation with them. I wish I did. I don't. But what you can do is pick one of those up and you'll see right away the difference it makes. Remember, the main thing that raises blood sugar is not food, it's stress. So when you wake up in the morning, your cortisol spikes in the morning, and that's because it's supposed to raise your blood sugar. If you crave something sweet in the morning, it means your adrenals didn't do their job to raise cortisol and now you're craving something sweet to give you a quick boost of energy, a quick spike of energy. So make sure you're paying attention to that. What are you craving in the morning? Is it sugary foods? If you're craving sugary foods midday, it's probably your adrenals not making enough cortisol to help you increase your blood glucose levels. Okay? When you're under stress, your primary source of fuel is not fat. Your primary source of fuel at rest is fat. Your primary source of fuel when you're running around, you know, in a, in a sympathetic state is actually glucose. So this is why your adrenal health is important, because it'll just create little blips of cortisol to raise your blood sugar throughout the day. When that's not happening, then the cravings of sugar are going to kick in and, and you're going to, and, or you're going to start to feel tired. You're going to oftentimes turn to coffee. But the problem is it's not coffee that's the actual solution. It's port adrenal health that needs to be addressed. And coffee is just a stimulant. So hope that helps. So if you just tuned in, we're talking about the Abbott Freestyle Libre, which is a $97 sensor that you can buy that pairs with your smart device that tracks your blood glucose, that helps you become more enlightened with how your food affects you, how your lifestyle affects you, how exercise affects you, how sitting in front of a computer affects you, what's happening, your blood sugar while you're sleeping that could be a cause of disruptive sleep is low blood sugar in the middle of the night and what's probably causing your energy to be sapped. So very easy, quick, affordable, painless way to track your blood glucose every 15 minutes for two weeks and then make better and more informed decisions and gamify your health. Get one for yourself, get one for your spouse, Eat the same foods for two weeks, experiment with different foods, go to your favorite restaurant, have your favorite meal, you know, eat a bag of chips, whatever you want to do, whatever it is that you're doing. Don't even change your behaviors. Just stay with your normal behaviors and eat what you normally eat and see how it's affecting you and how much it's throwing off your metabolic system. Remember that two hormones, if you can balance these two hormones, you will live long, you will be prosperous because you'll have good brain function and you will have excellent immune function as well. So those two hormones, the first one is insulin, the second one is cortisol. And the dance between these two hormones, the interface between these two hormones is blood glucose. So if you can track blood glucose, you have such powerful insights into your metabolic function for so little cost. And then you can start making strategic lifestyle, nutritional, emotional changes, meal timing changes, all that stuff. And you can see how you can improve your health in such a short period of time. I have again, people coming off their medications on their own accord, under their doctor's supervision, without pills, without supplements, but more so self awareness. Remember, skills over pills. Let me say that again. Type that into the chat so everyone sees it. Skills over pills. Most important thing that you'll ever learn is learn the skills to avoid the pills. Because supplements ain't cheap, folks, right? They're definitely not cheap. And we don't want to take a supplement to make up or compensate for a ignorant behavior. Ignorant just means you don't know, right? Some of my favorite foods, actually one of my favorite foods are these mushroom risotto burgers. If you've ever been to my house, you've probably had them. But these crush my blood sugar. They just cause it to go through the roof. Not so much in my wife, but for me, they cause it to go up. And so I stopped eating them because I knew they tasted good and the nutrient profile looks good and they're organic. However, they don't agree with my body. So just because the label says it's good for you, it doesn't mean it's good for me. And that applies to a lot of things in life, right? What's good for me may not be good for you. What's healthy for me and appropriate for me may not be healthy and appropriate for you. So Precision Wellness is here to stay. It's not going anywhere. Functional medicine is here to stay. And we're only getting started, folks. So I'll be sharing more information like this. If you found it helpful, please share. Drop a heart, Drop a like. And I'll see you all on the next video. Happy Functional Medicine Awareness Month. Stay healthy, my friends. Lots of love, lots of gratitude, and go out there and get that sensor. It'll serve you well. Serve your family well. It'll be a great experiment. It's great at parties. It's great. It's a great conversation starter as well. Anyways, talk to you soon. Bye for now.
