My favorite productivity tool

Sachin Patel shows how to use Mac's Text Replacement feature to create shortcuts that expand into longer text. Type NI and it becomes a NASA interview link, or Satch Bio and it pulls up his full bio. It cuts typos, speeds up replies, and keeps you off spam filters.

Hey, my friends, it's Sachin here. Today I wanted to share with you one of my favorite productivity hacks that I think will make a huge difference in your life. So I'm a Mac user, so this applies to Mac users. And if you're a Windows or PC user or an Android user, then this may apply to you. You just have to find the equivalent feature. So first things first. What I do is I press Command and Spacebar. When I press Command and Spacebar, I'm going to type in Text Replacement, the search field, and you're going to come to this little gear head, which is the settings section, and it's going to say Text replacements you're going to click on.
Once you click on that, it's going to bring you to. Yours might be blank, you can see mine is quite filled up. And what this section does and what this feature does is it allows you to replace a specific string of text. You can customize that to whatever you are comfortable with or whatever you're going to remember, whatever is easy for you to keep in mind. And then you're going to replace that text with a string of text of virtually any length. As an example. So here you can see I've got a bunch of different strings of text, and if I type these things in, it's going to replace the string of text that I type with the string that I desire. So this reduces the risk of a few things. One, it reduces the risk of making mistakes. So if you're typing your email address or if you're typing a link, or if you're sharing a link as an example, you don't have to copy and paste, copy and paste. You can just simply type in the string and it'll get replaced. The other thing that happens is this creates massive efficiencies. So some of you might notice that I'll type in something into Facebook and I'll say, hey, I created this. Who wants a copy of it? Comment below. And then what I do is instead of copying and pasting the link, which I believe Facebook catches onto, and then qualifies it as spam, what I do is I type in a very short message, personalize it, and then I type in my string, and then it gets instantly replaced. And I've been able to do that successfully without getting flagged for spamming people or anything like that, because I create a unique message each time I do this. So such a huge efficiency that I want to share this with you. And I thought that this would be helpful. So let me show you an example. So I recently did an interview with a NASA employee and I just simply labeled it NI NASA Interview. And it takes people directly to the YouTube link that I shared with them. So we're going to pull that up here and I'm just going to open.
Up my Chrome browser and you'll see here, here's the actual post itself. Let me make this full screen so you can see it. So I did this interview and on November 17th I shared. I interviewed a NASA flight surgeon and a productivity expert on my podcast yesterday. So this is kind of a meta post. Drop a rocket if you want the video and a free productivity guide. And you can see that a whole bunch of people responded to it. And as the responses are coming in, I like to stay on top of it. So what I then do is I go to newest and I just had one come in just a little a few hours ago. So I'm going to share that with you. And you can see Greg wanted a copy of it. So I'm going to click over here, I'm going to hit reply and then I'm going to say, I know you will love this.
Here you go.
And then I just press NI and you can see that the text instantly gets replaced and then that interview gets sent off to him. So the ability to customize this message and then use the text replacement feature I personally believe has made me more efficient. It's also allowed me to personalize my messages more and not have to hit copy and paste all the time. And of course, the applications of this can be endless. In fact, sometimes I get people ask me to type in my bio if I'm sharing, if I'm going to be on a summit or a podcast interview, and all I can do is I can just type in Satch Bio, which you'll see here. And instantly my bio pops in. And then of course, I can adjust the spacing and such should I choose to. I'm going to delete that for now. But the string of characters can be essentially unlimited. If somebody wants to schedule an appointment with me, I have a metabolic optimization call. And so I just type in MOC and instantly that link gets replaced. So I'm not fumbling around looking for these important links. You might have about a dozen or two dozen important links that you want to share with people that you're sharing on a regular basis. For me, Zoom with Sachin is another one. So I just type in ZWS and you can see that text instantly pops in. So figure out what those are for you and see if you can use this to increase and improve your efficiency and accuracy and and productivity. I hope this helps. And best of luck to you. Have an amazing, amazing rest of your day. Bye for now.
